May TIC Tip: Mental Health Awareness, provided by Amanda Cantu, Director of HFC's Child and Adolescent Services

Every spring in anticipation of mental health awareness month, Texas System of Care, along with HHSC, kicks off a creative arts contest that includes visual art, writing, and photography. The event started as a children’s contest and has grown to include an adult bracket in recent years. Winners are announced and submissions posted online in May. There is a different theme each year, but the overarching purpose is to reduce stigma and allow those touched by mental illness to express their thoughts and feelings on the matter. You can view the gallery here:

https://gallery.txsystemofcare.org/

The words and the images here are powerful. It is easy as behavioral health professionals to get stuck in a routine and say we know about stigma. We have talked to 100 people who have trauma. We know how to support those who struggle with their mental health. However, these contest submissions never fail to show me new perspectives and provide new understanding of how someone may be feeling. Here are some takeaways from this year’s submissions:

• Hope and encouragement are vital. Be the cheerleader. Be the voice that contradicts the negative self-talk.
• Seek to understand. People need to feel seen and heard.
• Be there to listen, even if the person is not ready to talk.
• Be persistent in offering support. Don’t give up if it is not accepted. Keep offering.

"Mental Health Awareness Month

For Mental Health Awareness Month 2024, consider this: In 2021, 22.8% of adults in the US (or 57.8 million people) experienced a mental illness. Over 57 million people. And that’s just the adults. There are 170 countries in the world that have LESS than 57 million people, total. Canada has just shy of 41 million people. Australia, 26.8 million. Greece has 10.4 million people. Imagine a country where every single person has a mental illness!

In the US we have a good-sized country’s worth of people who have experienced a mental illness. I don’t care that it’s “only” 22% percent of us. I wouldn’t care if it was 10%, or 5% percent. I think a society, and indeed an individual, may be measured by how they treat and care for those most in need, not most in number. The public needs Mental Health Awareness..."
