Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Yuma Mental Health & Wellness Center and Tanya R. Sorrell, PhD, PMHNP-BC- Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

"And on Earth, Peace, good will toward men." May the love and joy of the holidays keep you warm during this coming year.

Timeline photos 12/16/2022

Let's get ready for the holiday season! Dash to an Uber, Lyft, or Cab. No one should get a lump of DUI coal for Christmas!!

To get ready for a wonderful holiday season- Please don't drink and drive. Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 51 minutes. Driving drunk is never OK. Choose not to drink and drive and help others do the same.

Participating police agencies will have additional officers on patrol targeting impaired drivers on the highways this week and next. We recommend the following easy steps, for safe holiday weeks to come.

- Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
- Designate a non-drinking driver before any party or celebration
begins. Remind others to do the same. If you're going to be
drinking, leave your car keys at home;
- If you're impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member.
- If you happen to see an impaired driver on the road, don't hesitate
to call 911;
- If you’re hosting a party where alcohol will be served, remind your
guests to plan ahead and designate and ask who is their sober
driver; offer alcohol-free beverages; and make sure all guests
leave with a sober driver.
- Buckle up every time. It’s your best defense against a drunk driver.

And remember, if you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

Sober Ride is a program that offers free rides for anyone who wants them nationwide. Here is their website-

Have a joyous and safe holiday season!!

Cutting and Self-Harm - HelpGuide.org 03/04/2021

March is Self-harm prevention month.

Self-harm can be a way of dealing with deep distress and emotional pain. It may help you express feelings you can’t put into words, distract you from your life, or release emotional pain. Afterwards, you may feel better—at least for a little while. But then the painful feelings return, and you feel the urge to hurt yourself again. There is help to learn how to express your emotions and feelings without harming yourself, so that you'll feel better in the long run.

It's time to "STOP THE STIGMA" and talk about mental health and substance use issues. If you or someone you know is suffering from these issues, call us. Don't let these problems keep you from being the person you want to be.

Helping Someone with an Eating Disorder - HelpGuide.org 02/24/2021

Feb 22-28- National Eating Disorders Awareness Week

An eating disorder is an unhealthy relationship with food and weight that interferes with many areas of a person’s life. One’s thoughts become preoccupied with food, weight or exercise. A person who struggles with an eating disorder can have unrealistic self-critical thoughts about body image, and his or her eating habits may begin to disrupt normal body functions and affect daily activities. Eating disorders are not just about food and weight. People begin to use food as a coping mechanism to deal with uncomfortable or painful emotions or to help them feel more in control when feelings or situations seem over-whelming.

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. The mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate associated with all causes of death for females 15-24 years old. There isn’t one conclusive cause of eating disorders. Multiple factors are involved, such as genetics and metabolism; psychological issues – such as control, coping skills, trauma, personality factors, family issues; and social issues, such as a culture that promotes thinness and media that transmits this message.

It's time to "STOP THE STIGMA" and talk about mental health and substance use issues. If you or someone you know is suffering from these issues, call us. Don't let these problems keep you from being the person you want to be.

Yuma Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner 02/11/2021

During Black History Month we recognize the unique struggles that underrepresented groups face regarding mental illness in the United States.
- In 2019, 10.5% (3.5 million) of young adults age 18 to 25 had serious thoughts of su***de including 8.3% of non-Hispanic blacks and 9.2% of Hispanics.
- In 2019, 7.5% (2.5 million) of young adults age 18 to 25 had a serious mental illness including 7.6% of non-Hispanic Asians, 5.7% of Hispanics and 4.6% of non-Hispanic blacks.
- Feelings of anxiety and other signs of stress may become more pronounced during a global pandemic. People in some racial and ethnic minority groups may respond more strongly to the stress of a pandemic or crisis.
- Recent civil rights issues may further traumatize minority groups in reliving and reminding them of similar traumatic experiences and their continued lack of resolution.
It's time to "STOP THE STIGMA" and talk about mental health and substance use issues. If you or someone you know is suffering from these issues and the stress tips they are using aren't helping, call us. Don't let these problems keep you from being the person you want to be.
