It's Men's Health Week and we thought it was a perfect opportunity to re-share our R.A.I.S.E. campaign which helps people to spot the signs of depression in men.

Our survey found that 50% of therapists reported men present with different depression symptoms than women and that 56% of therapists agreed that men are less likely to get mental health support than women.

What does R.A.I.S.E. stand for? 🤔

Risk-taking
Anger
Isolation
Substance Abuse
Exhaustion

The campaign aims to raise awareness of these lesser known symptoms of depression in men and to encourage men to seek therapy if they are struggling with their mental health.

Mental illness impacts on our health in many ways. One is causing weight gain through multiple roots. Either it disrupts your eating pattern, or the stressor(s) with the depression causes DHEA: Cortisol ratio changes that predisposes you to insulin resistance and possible Diabetes Type II. In females this causes a decrease in the S-HBG marker that interprets as a higher testosterone level which may lead to infertility. The lack of exercise during mental illness may also lead to weight gain as well as poor sleeping pattern. Even the medication one is put on may lead to a risk for gaining weight.

What to do? See a professional that wil not only look at the mental issue, but also the weight issue, as the weight gain may also be a reason for the mental issue.

May is mental health awareness month.
What are the things you can do to improve your mental health?
Eat healthier - eat a colorful plate of food.
Get in touch with nature - get outside every morning.
Start moving - start with joga / chair joga
Clean up your surroundings - declutter your space.
Physically schedule vacation days or holidays - so you can visualize there will be such a day and that it is been placed somewhere official.
Instead of thinking about yourself, start focussing on others and start acts of kindness.
Challenge yourself - start learning something new.
Quality time - like a coffee with a friend.
Make sure to tick off your to-do list - reached and completed a goal.
Treat yourself!

Trauma and Addiction - Research shows that a person with a history of trauma has a higher likelihood of struggling with substance misuse and addiction disorders. It is essential to understand that abstinence may not diminish trauma symptoms but may, in fact, trigger them. This creates a vicious cycle whereby trying to abstain results in an increase in trauma symptoms such as emotional triggers or intrusive memories. This increase in trauma symptoms can then trigger a relapse because the sudden increase in unsettling symptoms creates an overwhelming desire to mood-alter. An effective addiction treatment program therefore needs to effectively address past trauma.
