World Water Day 💧🌧️

Water can create peace or spark conflict

When water is scarce or polluted, or when people have unequal, or no access, tensions can rise between communities and countries.

More than 3 billion people worldwide depend on water that crosses national borders. Yet, only 24 countries have cooperation agreements for all their shared water.

As climate change impacts increase, and populations grow, there is an urgent need, within and between countries, to unite around protecting and conserving our most precious resource.

Public health and prosperity, food and energy systems, economic productivity and environmental integrity all rely on a well-functioning and equitably managed water cycle.

The theme of World Water Day 2024 is ‘Water for Peace’.

When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges.

We must act upon the realization that water is not only a resource to be used and competed over – it is a human right, intrinsic to every aspect of life.

This World Water Day, we all need to unite around water and use water for peace, laying the foundations of a more stable and prosperous tomorrow.

World Forest Day 🌳🌲🌴🍃

Innovation and technology have revolutionized forest monitoring, enabling countries to track and report on their forests more effectively. A total of 13.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide forest emission reductions or enhancements have been reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change through transparent and innovative forest monitoring.

The theme for International Day of Forests 2024 is Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World.

The battle against deforestation requires new technological advancements. With 10 million hectares lost annually due to deforestation and approximately 70 million hectares affected by fires, these innovations are essential for early warning systems, sustainable commodity production, and empowering Indigenous Peoples through land mapping and climate finance access.

Additionally, ecosystem restoration, including reforestation efforts, can significantly contribute to climate mitigation and enhance food security while pushing the boundaries of sustainable wood products. and enhance food security while promoting sustainable wood products.

It’s a day to be happy, of course! Since 2013, the United Nations has celebrated the International Day of Happiness as a way to recognize the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.

Happiness is a fundamental human goal. The United Nations General Assembly recognizes this goal and calls for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples.”

In 2015, the UN launched the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which seek to end poverty, reduce inequality, and protect our planet – three key aspects that lead to well-being and happiness.

The United Nations invites each person of any age, plus every classroom, business and government to join in celebration of the International Day of Happiness.

Holy Maha Shivaratri 🕉️🌙

Maha Shivaratri is an annual Hindu festival dedicated to the deity Shiva, celebrated between February and March. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls on the fourteenth day of the dark (waning) half of the lunar month of Phalguna or Magha. The festival commemorates the divine union of Shiva and Parvati, as well as Shiva's enchanting dance known as the Tandava.

This significant Hindu celebration serves as a poignant reminder to "overcome darkness and ignorance" in both life and the world. Devotees observe Maha Shivaratri by recalling Shiva, engaging in prayer, fasting, and reflecting on ethical virtues such as honesty, non-injury, charity, forgiveness, and the exploration of Shiva within. Many dedicated followers stay awake throughout the night, while others visit Shiva temples or embark on pilgrimages to the sacred Jyotirlingams. Believed to have originated in the 5th century BCE, this festival continues to inspire spiritual devotion and cultural significance. 🙏✨

International Women’s Day 👩👩‍⚕️👩‍🌾👩‍🍳👩‍🎤👩‍🏫

Gender equality is a simple idea. It is the conviction that women deserve the same rights, opportunities and knowledge as men. It is the belief that women have just as much to contribute to society – and to addressing societal issues. It is the commitment to breaking down barriers that have held women back for far too long.

Yet, for all its simplicity, gender equality is proving remarkably difficult to achieve. Today, no country in the world can claim to be gender equal. At our current pace, it will take almost 300 years for all countries to be able to do so. In the meantime, according to UNESCO data, artificial intelligence will claim more jobs from women than men by the end of this decade. The climate crisis will push an estimated 160 million women into poverty by 2050.

To break down the barriers facing women, UNESCO has made gender equality a global priority for its action. We acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by women scientists, artists, journalists, educators and athletes. We work to ensure all women and girls are given the opportunities they deserve. And, every year on 8 March, we mark International Women’s Day to raise awareness of these issues.

A Day Is Not 24 Hours 🌞🔄🌍🕐

Leap Day, also known as February 29th, occurs in most years that are evenly divisible by 4, such as 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and so on. However, to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical year, there is an exception to this rule: a year that is divisible by 100 but not by 400 is not a leap year.

For example, the year 1900 is divisible by 4 and 100, but not by 400, so it was not a leap year. In contrast, the year 2000 is divisible by 4, 100, and 400, so it was a leap year.

The addition of an extra day in February helps to align the calendar year with the time it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun (approximately 365.2422 days). Leap Day is a corrective measure to ensure that our calendar remains in sync with the Earth's revolutions around the Sun.

How long is a day? If we define a day based on an actual, daily, observable physical phenomenon, then we have two possible answers. If we define a day as one complete spin of the Earth on its axis — a stellar day — then a day is about 4 minutes less than 24 hours. If we define a day as the time between true noon one day and true noon the next day — a solar day — then the length of a day varies throughout the year, ranging from 21 seconds less than 24 hours to 30 seconds more than 24 hours. But if we take the average length of all the solar days in a year, then the result is exactly 24 hours, which is how we arrived at our standard day. However, there are only 4 times each year when the standard day and the true solar day have the same length. The upshot is that the standard 24-hour day is not something found in nature, but a human invention that only roughly corresponds to the real days — solar days or stellar days — that we actually experience on Earth.

World Mother Language Day 🗣️

The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. It was approved at the 1999 UNESCO General Conference and has been observed throughout the world since 2000.

UNESCO believes in the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies. It is within its mandate for peace that it works to preserve the differences in cultures and languages that foster tolerance and respect for others.

Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way.

Linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear.

Globally 40 percent of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. Nevertheless, progress is being made in multilingual education with growing understanding of its importance, particularly in early schooling, and more commitment to its development in public life.
