What do bats and autonomous trucks have in common? Both can "see" and navigate in complete darkness using their sensory systems!
In a literal sense, our self-driving truck sees through a machine vision camera positioned behind the glass in the upper part of the front panel. It captures and sends multiple images to a neural network (aka the autopilot), which swiftly categorizes the images into identifiable objects. The images are recorded in extremely high resolution to capture details of the surroundings and ensure accurate recognition of objects, road signs, and markings, allowing for quick and precise reactions to changes. The camera is also highly light-sensitive, ensuring optimal visibility during low-light conditions, critical for nighttime driving and poor weather scenarios.

Another crucial element of the truck's environmental perception are three LiDAR sensors positioned at the front sides of the vehicle. These devices generate not images, but a three-dimensional map of the surroundings extending 50-100 meters around the truck. Inside each LiDAR is a mirror that directs outgoing light at 10 rounds per second. By measuring the time it takes for the light to return, LiDAR constructs a detailed view of the truck's environment, including depth and volume of each object.

The information from the camera and LiDARs is synchronized to ensure that the truck senses the world as accurately and comprehensively as possible. Additionally, Evocargo N1 uses three sonar sensors that emit ultrasonic waves and record the time of their return echoes, thus, accurately determining the location of objects in space. This is the same mechanism used by bats in nature, which humans replicated using technology. The sonars used on the Evocargo N1 trucks allow them to identify objects up to 10 meters away and assist greatly in precise reverse parking maneuvers.

How self-driving trucks make business more efficient

One of the main drivers of Evocargo service is to help business to reach higher KPIs. The service model of cargo transportation allows business to fully focus on improving logistics operations while Evocargo is taking over maintenance issues. It includes technical inspection, remote software updates and operator’s work.

The service allows to reduce fuel costs in up to 2,5 times and save up on a wage and a holiday pay due to the minimal human involvement and AV’s round-the-clock operation.

Noteworthy, service efficiency grows in a direct ratio to the number of AV’s operating on the site, that is why the more autonomous trucks company deploys, the more money it saves on daily logistics operations. As of now, several autonomous trucks on the site can save up to 37% on maintenance costs.

Evocargo service implies an easy and flexible integration into business processes and usually takes up to two weeks to install the infrastructure and adapt HAV to the specific location.

Here are 4 basic stages that we go through with every client in order to get the HAVs to function in their territory and achieve the most efficient cargo transportation.

Step 1: Territory checkup and analysis of the current logistics processes.
Evocargo experts inspect the territory and perform an analysis in order to assess the current logistics processes of the client. The stage usually takes just one day.

Step 2: Infrastructure deployment. Evocargo experts make sure that the Internet connection is stable and fast enough, do the road marking and organize an electrical network in the location of the control room and HAV storage.

Step 3: Creation of a digital map of the territory. Evocargo experts film the area via quadcopter, then create a digital map of the territory to make markups and define the most optimal routes for HAVs.

Step 4: Comprehensive tests of HAVs on the territory and optimization of the route map. The final stage includes testing operation of HAVs on a client’s territory for final adjustments in order to achieve a perfect HAVs’ performance.

Every autonomous truck is equipped with a set of special devices that form a visual system and that allow the vehicle to locate itself and navigate on the road even in a complete darkness. The autopilot of a self-driving car makes decisions based on the information it gets from the visual system. It includes:

• Cameras that detect and send the information about any road signs or the traffic lights.

• LIDARs (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors receive and process information about remote objects using light signals. The sensor sends up to 200 000 pulses per second and determines the time of their return, forming a three-dimensional point cloud that allows to create a 3D map with a range of up to 250 m.

• SONARs (SOund NAvigation Ranging) use ultrasound waves for detecting the objects around and measuring the distance to it.

• Stereo cameras receive and form a 3D image through the use of CMOS and CCDs technologies, used to determine the range of objects.

• GNSS allows to track the location of a vehicle on the world map then build a route. This type of navigation can provide location information from a few centimeters to meters, depending on the territory.

Even though Evocargo HAVs are completely safe there is still a need to provide monitoring for safe operation in case of abnormal situation.

Every HAVs operates under the supervision of a dispatcher. An operator himself can be located anywhere and monitor up to 10 HAVs at the same time via personal computer. The safety of the connection is provided by an encrypted communication channel. The dispatch system has an original Evocargo software and allows to plan the route, start and stop the vehicles and make a visual check-up of the HAVs’ surroundings. In case of an accident operator helps the HAV with a decision-making and either changes the route or stops the vehicle.

In this way, Evocargo service allows businesses to minimize the human involvement and therefore save up on the wages.

How zero-emission autonomous vehicles make the world a better place: Evocargo’s contribution to sustainable development.

Nations around the world have been targeting emission reductions for many years in a bid to combat the climate crisis. However, despite commitments to policies such as the Paris Agreement, emissions and atmospheric CO2 levels have continued to rise. Today the road freight industry accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions, consuming over 6 million barrels of oil per year.

As the challenge of global ecological problems gets more visible every day, autonomous vehicles running on electricity become a cleaner alternative that can seem like an important step in transforming the auto business into an emission-free industry.

Evocargo was founded as a response to these challenges and in a belief that the new era of autonomy and electrification will create a better and more sustainable future by developing eco-friendly solutions. Evocargo’s unmanned electric platform EVO.1 consumes alternative energy resources instead of conventional gasoline and totally excludes environmental pollution. The platform is equipped with a hybrid power system: from electric batteries, which in turn are replenished with electricity from hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen is not toxic and does not affect the environment in any way, while NOx and other air pollutants produced from regular vehicles are extremely harmful to public health, especially in condensed urban areas. The hybrid system of EVO.1 allows to double the power reserve of an unmanned platform. Thus EVO.1 can operate along the distance up to 200 km on a single charge.

Though still a relatively new technology, EV will only continue to grow more advanced and sustainable. Each company that reflects on its actions and responsibility should join the side of eco-friendly solutions and develop a sustainable future for both itself and the world around.

Logistics as a backbone of every industry and an unwieldy structure itself faces plenty of challenges today - from shortage of drivers and change in customers’ demand to ecological and technological barriers. Autonomous vehicles developed as a response to the current market demands have been found having a great perspective not only for business but for the planet's well-being.

First of all, autonomous vehicles increase overall efficiency by making split-second decisions that are not possible for humans. With the use of AI technology, they process huge amounts of data and make decisions in a few seconds for identifying best-travel routes to optimize on-road time and speed.

Secondly, autonomous vehicles offering round-the-clock operation and running on alternative energy provide significant costs-savings due to decrease of fuel consumption and optimizing demand for driving personnel.

Another important contribution is an increasing safety record. As there are plenty of negative factors that truck drivers experience on the road or within enclosed areas that lead to a high rate of accidents, autonomous vehicles rely on their intelligent systems and never get tired or distracted and let the vehicles drive in a safe mode.

As environmental problems get more serious every day, autonomous vehicles running on alternative energy provide an eco-friendly solution for cargo transportation due to zero-emission.

Evocargo, as one of the frontmen of autonomous logistics today, faces all requirements to make cargo transportation more effective, more secure and more sustainable. Electricity- or hydrogen-based unmanned platforms with a load capacity up to 2 tons and a 200 km driving range provide round-the-clock operation and do not involve driver personnel. This model can navigate logistics into the new era of an innovative and sustainable cargo transportation.

Autonomous In-Hub transportation will be the first stage of the mass adoption of unmanned cargo transport.

In-Hub means cargo transportation in closed and confined areas: at large industrial enterprises and logistics centers, seaports, airports and railway warehouses. In-Hub autonomous vehicles are actively operated in the USA, China and in European countries.

Unmanned In-Hub shipping will be massively implemented rather than Hub-to-Hub (transportation between cities), since this model involves autonomous vehicles running along the same repeating routes and at a lower speed. Among other things, they can operate in the areas with few or no people at all, for instance, in fully automated warehouses. It is an easier and safer way to deploy driverless trucks than cargo transportation on common roads and in the cities.

EVO.1 is an autonomous electric N1 class cargo platform and a ready-made working solution for In-Hub cargo transportation. EVO.1 fleet can be implemented on your facility with all the necessary infrastructure, including Control Center (a software suite for monitoring autonomous vehicles operation), charging stations and integration with existing information systems. EVO.1 is a cool product developed by Evocargo from scratch, which will help you automate the cargo transportation in confined areas and increase the efficiency and sustainability of your business. Go Evocargo!

EVO.3 – an autonomous electric N3 class truck by Evocargo.

Meet EVO.3 – our driverless semi-truck with 44-ton load capacity, the production of which will start this year. The platform uses hybrid engines powered by electricity and hydrogen. This increases the drive range up to 1,000 km (621 miles) per charge.

The charging infrastructure for EVO.3 will be based on robotic charging stations that charge and refuel the platform automatically.

EVO.3 will be used for Hub-to-Hub shipping between cities and cargo hubs. The autonomous delivery will be a natural evolution from human-operated to fully robotic vehicles for long-haul cargo transportation!

Why we’ve made the unmanned EVO.1 platform all-electric?

Did you know that electric platforms are several times more cost-effective than ICE cars? Moreover, electric vehicles are cheaper to maintain and charge than conventional cars.

EVO.1 can be charged using a regular 220V outlet or an industrial 380V outlet. That is, the vehicle is fully charged overnight even when a regular outlet is used, and it can operate all day after the charge.

Zero emissions are one of the main advantages of electric motors. EVO.1 can enter enclosed spaces, where ICE vehicles may not be allowed due to dirt, environmental, health and safety requirements.

Additionally, EVO.1 uses asynchronous motors without permanent magnets. Today, there is a global challenge of sourcing permanent magnets for electric vehicles. Since the major deposits of such magnets are located in China, the prices are over-inflated and the demand greatly exceeds the supply. The use of high-quality electric motors without permanent magnets has enabled us to solve the problem. Meanwhile, in terms of power, such motors are analogous to two-litre diesel motors.

EVO.1 unmanned vehicles by Evocargo maximize cargo transportation volumes and payloads without polluting air. Make your business more sustainable and eco-friendly with all-electric EVO.1!

How autonomous electric EVO.1 platforms will improve the business efficiency

Presently, since the unmanned platforms and trucks are not very common yet and mainly tested at pilot areas and research centers (though there are also cases of commercial introduction, including EVO.1 so far), a number of potential customers do not understand why they need to deploy autonomous trucks. Let us explain it using the example of EVO.1 platform by Evocargo:

Sustainability (Eco-friendliness) of autonomous vehicles, which will be basically electric. Most of the self-driving vehicles are now produced immediately as electric cars, including EVO.1. This is due to the convenient introduction of a modern set of sensors into an electric car: lidars, cameras, radars, etc. and software. According to the studies conducted in Europe, electric vehicles generate 66-69% less greenhouse gas emissions during their life cycle compared to gasoline cars. This is especially important for unmanned platforms operating near people, for example in large warehouses. Additionally, electric cars are near-silent: special audio and visual signals are even created for them so that people know in advance that the vehicle is approaching.

Safety. EVO.1 is absolutely safe for the nearby people, conventional cars and infrastructure facilities. Due to the cameras and sensors located on the front, back and sides of the platform, the unmanned vehicle has a 360-degree all-round view. The human error is also excluded during the platform operation. Now, by various estimates and studies, from 80 to 95% of all road accidents in the world are caused by human drivers, being distracted, tired, inexperienced, falling asleep at the wheel, speeding and breaking traffic rules, being drunk, etc. Unfortunately, all these cases often lead to fatal or serious accidents. A self-driving car, unlike a human driver, is never tired or annoyed, always minds the rules, it is a non-drinker and can “see” the road much further ahead without blind spots.

Efficiency. Higher efficiency of EVO.1 is achieved by using electricity instead of ICE, saving on drivers' salaries, as well as a longer work shift of autonomous vehicles. Route optimization is also important. Due to AI, the platforms are able to optimize their routes to the full to save time and energy. In addition, the fleet consisting of several EVO.1 can operate closely together on one site.

So, your business is related to cargo shipping, and you want to make it safer, more sustainable and efficient? The best solution is EVO.1 unmanned electric platforms by Evocargo!
