Sand colic is relatively common for horses in the UAE. This happens when the horse ingests sand when eating. Ingestion of sand can result in problems in the GI tract. In cases where the sand accumulation is not big and the horse doesn’t show colic signs, this can be treated medically but in cases with large accumulation of sand and colic signs, these patients need surgery urgently. Thumps, also called synchronous diaphragmatic flutter (SDF), is a condition that affects horses when the diaphragm and the heartbeat synchronize. It is characterized by rhythmic contractions of the diaphragm due to the excitation of the phrenic nerve. It causes the horse to make a thumping sound and looks like hiccups.

Early recognition and treatment of congenital and acquired flexural deformities of the fetlocks in foals can lead to conformation correction and an athletic future. Treatment is often based on rigid external coaptation assisted by systemic medical treatment and/or surgical intervention in more severe cases. Foals that respond to treatment and correct conformation faults can have normal adult athletic expectations. In this case, proximal and distal check ligaments desmotomies and Paniolo splints for external coaptation were used successfully.

Granulosa cell tumours (GCTs) are the most common tumour to affect the ovaries. They are usually benign, meaning they do not spread. However, as they grow, they may press on other organs in the body and become painful or cause colic-symptoms. They also secrete hormones which prevent the mare cycling properly and potentially change her behaviour.

Patent Urachus is an umbilical disease in newborn foals where urine dripping is seen from the umbilicus/navel. A patent urachus that is acquired within the first few weeks, where everything was normal at birth, is more common in foals spending prolonged time lying down. This means that foals that are systemically unwell are most at risk of developing a patent urachus. A patent urachus is often associated with an umbilical infection.
Call your veterinarian to evaluate your foal if:
• urine is observed leaking from the umbilicus
• you can see/feel moisture on or around the hair coat surrounding the umbilicus
• enlargement of the umbilicus
