Panel Discussion "Matter, Non-Matter, Anti-Matter"

On July 20, 2022 Tirana Art Lab director and curator Adela Demetja moderated a discussion between Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás, head of the Beyond Matter EU project and scientific associate at ZKM - Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe, artist Olson Lamaj and curator Valentina Peri, both fellows of the Tirana Art Lab Residency Program.

Here a quote form the curator Valentina Peri that talks about the research she developed during the residency program at Tirana Art Lab. Inside the exhibition Matter, Non-Matter, Anti-Matter she presents her ongoing project "Her Boyfriend Came Back From The War”. The starting point of her work was the discovery of her Italian Grandfather’s WWII archive who was stationed in Albania and the love correspondence between her grandparents at that time. The aim of this project is to reactivate the archive through the use of Augmented Reality (AR), and to trigger a re-enactement of individual and collective memories. She is particularly interested in how it will impact the organization of narratives.

Inside the exhibition Matter, Non-Matter, Anti-Matter he is presenting a series of photographs under the title “Pixel and Blood” depicting important buildings of the Tirana city center. The prominence of these buildings has been previously used by the communist regime and the state propaganda as sites to place political slogans. Through an AR Application, he created new semi-monuments that contribute critically to debates in relation to digital transformation, spectacle, consumption and power structures in contemporary societies and art in Albania and beyond. HUNITI GOLDOX at Tirana Art Lab In March Tirana Art Lab welcomed the artist duo HUNITI GOLDOX for the last round of the Beyond Matter EU residency program. HUNITI GOLDOX is an artist duo consisting of Areej Huniti and Eliza Goldox. They have been active for over 2,5 years now and reside between Germany and Jordan. In their practice they are interested in geopolitical realities, marginalised oral histories, and contextual research. On site they will continue to pursue their interest in engaging with mutant narratives by researching the aqua ecosystem of Tirana and its surroundings. Through their project they are expanding on the understanding of the geopolitical realities of diverse bodies of water and the archival qualities of metal, plastic and organic contaminants which offer temporal gaps for the documentation of the present in alternative ways. More info here: https://beyondmatter.eu/news/tirana-art-lab-residency The residency program is part of the large-scale cooperation project BEYOND MATTER – Cultural Heritage on the Verge of Virtual Reality, co-funded by Creative Europe and German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media. #beyondmattereu #creativeeuropreeu #tiranaartlab #hunitigoldox #beyondmatterresidencyprogram Areej Huniti Eliza Goldox

Today we want to continue sharing with you details from the desktop version of Tirana Floating Archive, the new digital platform initiated by Tirana Art Lab as part of the Beyond Matter EU project. The archive is structured in six categories and the one we want to present today is Maelstrom. A maelstrom is a powerful whirlpool of water produced by opposing currents or a current running into an obstacle and it is often regarded also as an oceanic black hole. Given the maelstrom’s potent and unpredictable character, this category is dedicated to projects with a direct and confrontational impact. Using their actions to protest and refuse the order of things, these projects come as forms of critique and resistance. In Shtëpizëza (2014) Sead Kazanxhiu installs 2,500 handmade pottery houses in front of the Prime Minister Building as a protesting gesture in public space calling attention to the Roma housing situation. TFA is curated by Adela Demetja & Eni Derhemi Aira La Mer; Design by Denislav Golemanov; Code by Marin Nikolli . Co-financed by Swiss Cultural Fund and Creative Europe. https://www.tiranafloatingarchive.org/ #beyondmattereu #tiranaartlab #tiranafloatingarchive #seadkazhanxhiu #creativeeurope #denislavgolemanov #swissculturefundalbania #eniderhemi #adelademetja

Today we want to share with you details from the Tirana Floating Archive, the new digital platform initiated by Tirana Art Lab as part of the Beyond Matter EU project. The idea of the floating archive derived from the fact that most of the interventions do not exist anymore and have left no physical traces. A structure serves as a conceptual framework for archiving the projects under specific categories, while still aiming at preserving the ethereal quality of the projects. The categories are linked with the notion of floating and are inspired by sea and water related phenomenons. Fata Morgana one of the categories in the archive, is inspired by the optical phenomenon caused by atmospheric conditions, creating a form of mirage appearing above the sea horizon but that can be seen on land too. In this archive, Fata Morgana stands for projects whose approach is oriented towards transformation and experimentation. With the intention to modify and reshape the way one looks at and experiences the given reality. One of the works in this category is “PIPIFAX FOR TIRANA” by Haus am Gern (Rudolf Steiner & Barbara Meyer Cesta). A project consisting of interventions and performances in different locations in public space, that took place in 2011. TFA documents past and present art occurrences in public space in Tirana from 2002 until today. Curated by Adela Demetja & Eni Derhemi; Design by Denislav Gloemanov; Code by Marin Nikolli. Co-financed by Swiss Culture Fund Albania and Creative Europe. www.tiranafloatingarchive.org #beyondmattereu #tiranaartlab #tiranafloatingarchive #hausamgern #creativeeurope #denislavgolemanov #swissculturefundalbania #eniderhemi #adelademetja

Tirana Time Capsule #2 was created by Alex Walmsley during his residency at Tirana Art Lab - Center for Contemporary Art in the framework of Beyond Matter EU project. Tirana Time Capsule #2 is a virtual web-based environment composed of 3D scans and audio field recordings from the Kombinat neighbourhood in Tirana, Albania. The work investigates the ways in which high-fidelity digital recording techniques appropriate and reconstruct public space in the virtual sphere and through subjective remaking can become a space where personal memory and community heritage merge. The residency of Alex Walmsley was supported by Goethe-Zentrum Tirana and co-founded by Creative Europe. The virtual experience can be navigated here https://tiranatimecapsule.beyondmatter.eu For more information check our website http://www.tiranaartlab.org/en/project-collection/tirana-time-capsule-2 #beyondmattereu #CreativeEurope #tiranaartlab #alexwalmsley #tiranatimecapsule
