the plan was to teach him to be a better dog.
instead he showed me how to be a better person.
from the day i got him he trusted me with everything.
he lived to be my dog.
and i never betrayed that trust until last night.
for 3.5 years we shared a bond that was stronger than steel.
he was the smartest dog i ever saw.
a big dog with a big personality.
a friend to everyone he knew
and he never met a stranger.
but no matter how quick he learned
or how much he understood.
he did not understand sickness
and he did not understand death.
as his body was failing him
he looked to me.
from that first day he always came to me for help.
but this i could not fix.
i could remove a locust thorn from his paw
or put salve on a cut.
i could hold him until hurt feelings healed
and his was a sensitive soul.
but the sickness was beyond my control.
i could only watch as his body torn apart while that great mind went on.
while our love continued.
but last night it came the time that it must end.
we took one last ride.
that big head resting in my lap.
i had to carry him in,
but then he tottered about
barely able to stand
inspecting everything.
the curiosity that burned in his inquisitive mind never faded.
satisfied,
he came over to lean against me and get petted.
one last big lean.
i held his big head in my hands
massaging his favorite places.
he looked up at me with contentment.
and then he was gone.
and there was a hole in my heart.
this morning there was an empty bed
that will never be filled.
something missing
that will never be replaced.
i know i did what had to be done.
so why does it hurt so much?

marathon #89 at Vienna City Marathon with DOWE SPORTSWEAR . went pretty good until km 30 when it became sh*tty 😂😅🤭 i visited every portable toilet from km 30 to the finish 😀🙄🚽!
next one's around the corner.
