In this talk, Andreas Bintinger, Head of Services at the Viennese music publisher Universal Edition, talked about the challenges and opportunities the publishing industry has faced, especially in recent years. He gave us insights into the traditional publishing business, but also into new developments around digitalisation and present new models of cooperation between publishers and composers. Furthermore, he gave composers insights into the demands and opportunities they must face today and provide them guidance for a successful career from a publisher’s point of view. We are delighted to announce that Toby Purser, Head of Conducting at the Royal College of Music, will be offering a masterclass for VCL at the Musikverein. About: Toby is Head of Conducting at the Royal College of Music, London. He began the role in January 2020, helping steer the department though lockdown and Covid, and is immensely excited to support and mentor so many talented student conductors as they embark on the many performance and rehearsal opportunities already taking place. The RCM has a long and distinguished history of conducting teaching, and Toby will be following in the footsteps of professors that have included Sir Adrian Boult and Norman del Mar.

Toby’s work with the Vienna Opera Academy continues with performances of Don Giovanni and Hänsel und Gretel and the Musikverein. The Academy will give three exceptionally talented student conductors the opportunity to work and study with me during the process, and work with our selected 12 international young singers. Here is a short video introducing our project and my thoughts about conducting Mozart in Vienna, interviewed by my friend and brilliant wine writer Darrel Joseph.

David John Roche’s music is direct, determined, and loud. Strongly influenced by heavy metal, lush orchestral music, and his working-class Welsh background, David’s work has been praised for its “passages of intense expressive power” (Thomas Adès), described as “exquisite” (Adam Walton, BBC Introducing), and marked out as “bold, exciting, and beautiful” (Sir James Dyson).

In tandem with a consistent string of international performances and commissions, his compositions have been broadcast, televised, and written about internationally to millions of people (Rai5, Tellebelluno, S4C, NHK, BBC Radio 3, BBC Introducing, London Evening Standard, and many others). He is currently completing commissions for the Tanglewood Music Centre, Tokyo Opera City Cultural Foundation, and the Vale of Glamorgan Festival (Tredegar Town Band). He is also undertaking research and production work with Meta Arts and Wales Arts Review.

David has completed commissions for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Jan Willem Nelleke and Jose Zalba Smith, Siwan Rhys, Astrid the Dutch Street Organ, Orion Orchestra and Dyson, Brian Ellis, Cambridge University Communications Department, Centre of Cell, Royal Observatory Greenwich, National Library of Wales, British Library, Psappha, Hear and Now in conjunction with Psappha, Psappha, Ty Cerdd and Hijinx Theatre, NAFTA Ensemble, and many others. He has long, collaborative, developed relationships with festivals and ensembles.

He has been awarded an Arts Council England Developing Your Creative Practice Grant, a Lithuanian Arts Council Grant, has received an AHRC studentship, undertaken a Tanglewood Fellowship, and was nominated for an award by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Overall, he has received more than 30 academic and professional awards.

Afternoon Cultural Outings

The iconic houses of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert after an informative lecture on each.

Cultural Outings, Four Seminars & Recording + Live Streaming!
Participating composers will receive inspiration from “Afternoon Cultural Outings” to the iconic houses of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert as well as the Arnold Schoenberg Center after an informative lecture on each. Various Seminars are also planned with guest speakers shedding light on Music Publishing, Copyright, Music Production and Ensemble Conducting. All works will receive a professional recording with the Wiener Festspiele Ensemble. Selected works by a Jury will go on to be part of a Live-Stream Performance. Composers will also be invited to one of the stellar performances of the Vienna Opera Academy at the Mozarthause-Museum. All of these activities will offer plenty of opportunities for professional networking and establishing meaningful international and professional friendships.

Composition Commission! Selected participants will receive a composition commission on the first day of this course, with set requirements and parameters to be met such as its instrumentation, length of work and submission date. The reward for these commissions will be a professional audio-visual recording at the hand of the professional Wiener Festspiele Ensemble. Each composer will be mentored by composer Luis Saglie through five one-to-one lessons during the span of the first two and a half weeks. The third week will be reserved for score preparation, several rehearsals and a closing studio recording of the works.
