With two special we will be taking part at the upcoming edition of VOICES 2024 in Berlin:

| 🥳 : Happy Birthday! |

Today, we join in the celebrations commemorating the legacy of Arnold Schoenberg on his 150th birthday, hooray! 🎉 It's a curious twist of fate that this anniversary falls on a Friday the 13th, echoing the very date of Schoenberg's passing in 1951.

Klangforum Wien looks back with gratitude on its close connection with Schoenberg’s music. This relationship was particularly nurtured under the guidance of the late Friedrich Cerha, when, back in the day, we performed Schoenberg’s 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴 and 𝘚𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘥𝘦 for the first time.

Our most recent homage to Schoenberg took the form of 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘨, 𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘩𝘯𝘵𝘦 at MusikTheater an der Wien. This music theatre production offered a vibrant and playful exploration of the composer's scintillating world, touching on his well-known fear of the number 13. We also fondly recall our collaboration with choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas and soprano Sofia Jernberg - singer, composer for a staging of Pierrot Lunaire in 2021/22.

This year, we have also taken steps to carry on Schoenberg’s legacy in light of his forgotten female master students who were hardly acknowledged at the time: In partnership with the Wiener Festwochen, we participated in the foundation of the , a global platform for womxn composers, promoting and demanding their visibility.

Continuously adding to our Schoenberg repertoire, we've performed Richard Dünser's newly re-composed and re-created pieces of some of Schoenberg’s landmark compositions – SOON TO BE RELEASED ON CD. 🤩

🎉 Happy Birthday to the unforgettable innovator!

| 🤩 Today’s recommendation for you: Schwaz |

🎶 This year’s motto of KLANGSPUREN SCHWAZ 2024 is 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, and in times of increasing polarity it seeks to focus on connection. “Conspiratio” originally meant “breathing together” and can, therefore, in a positive sense signify community and connectedness.

From 5 - 22 September, artistically diverse projects and formats will demonstrate what this can mean in concrete terms, ranging from musical performances and installations to music theatre and hybrid programmes, programmes at the interface between early and new music, between creative cooperation and improvisation.

Don’t miss to have a look at the programme and to experience this multi-layered festival in Tyrol!

Right on time for the weekend, we present you our third summer listening: 𝘌𝘯𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 by Matthias Kranebitter.

🎶 In the compositions by Kranebitter the use of electronics usually is a given. Instead of only serving as atmospheric background, they themselves embody fractures within the music, highlighting them and making them accessible to the audience. Awarded with the Erste Bank Composition Award in 2020, Kranebitter recorded this album together with Klangforum Wien, conducted by Johannes Kalitzke, as well as the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Black Page Orchestra.

Right on time for the weekend, we present 𝘚𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴 by Mirela Ivičević as our second tip for your summer listenings!

Ivičević, born in 1980, is one of the most fascinating composers of her generation. While critically exploring society’s micro- and macro-political questions and at the same time dealing with her own emotional world, her work can be described as unrestricted, energetic, and explosive. In 2019, she received the Erste Bank Composition Award.

Ivičević definitely creates brave and rebellious compositions – “her music roars, it rears up, it shrieks and falls away, it curses and moans” – which can be heard on this recording released on KAIROS. Created between 2014/16 and 2019, the selected 5 pieces offer an intense and captivating listening experience.
