Public space is an open and free space in the general sense. A space that does not have to be fought for, but is available to all and can be used equally. A lofty illusion. The right to maintain a public space has always had to be obtained. It is only by entering and passing through that a space is claimed and at the same time democratically negotiated. This "Right of Passage" is always also a political act. It creates a transition from the opening of one's own individual space to a social public space: I trust my counterpart and share a communal space. The public space is therefore the framework of trust and the shared understanding of accepting each other and giving each other space. This process must be protected and guaranteed as fundamentally equal.

The artists approach the freely accessible Schillerplatz, which surrounds the academy, with this awareness: to be politically active. We have a common understanding of the need to change communal space with artistic means. This does not require audible politicians or institutional languages, but rather a very own socialized artistic assumption of connected and consenting thought and action: By standing and walking together, we can grow, be audible and visible, can determine and shape social space. A small artistic revolutionary moment that produces fascial and synaptic growths and miracles.

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna welcomes the curator collective What, How & for Whom (WHW) as guest lecturers in a curatorial project with students. Nataša Ilić and Ivet Ćurlin will be realizing exhibition projects with students over the next two years with the support of the Kontakt Collection.

With the project "The secret is that there is no secret", WHW want to discuss curating as a collaborative effort with students at the Academy. As part of their teaching assignment, Ilić and Ćurlin will specifically address institutions in Vienna and Austria that have showcased artistic practices from Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe (CEE).

The two-year teaching assignment at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, supported by the ERSTE Foundation, promotes educational programs that make knowledge about the theory and practice of art in former Eastern Europe accessible. The ERSTE Foundation is supporting the project on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Kontakt collection.

Last week, .at's "Pass Egal Wahl" took place at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. 144 votes were cast in total. 77 people with a non-Austrian citizenship participated, and 67 Austrian citizens handed in a solidarity vote.

The 77 people are citizens of 24 different countries - European and non-European both. About half of them are German citizens, others are citizens of, for example, Bangladesh, Argentina, Russia, the US, or Pakistan.

The general result for the "Pass Egal Wahl" in Austria is as follows:

A total of 19,854 people with passports from 120 different countries took advantage of the symbolic voting opportunity, including 11,428 Austrian citizens who expressed their solidarity with people who do not have the right to vote.

Among voters without Austrian citizenship, the SPÖ took first place among the parties running nationwide. It received 36.8 percent of the vote. They were followed by the Greens with 19.3 percent, KPÖ with 10.4 percent, FPÖ with 8.1 percent, NEOS with 7.9 percent, ÖVP with 6.4 percent, KEINE with 3.2 percent, BIER with 2.9 percent and LMP with 0.7 percent.

Thank you to everyone who participated at , and thank you to all colleagues involved in realizing this project!

"Weißer Fleck" (Blind Spot) is an innovative artistic research project that is now on display on the façade of a Gemeindebau in Heiligenstadt, Vienna!

It is a long term collaborative effort between the Insitute for Art and Architecture, the Institute of Natural Sciences and Technology in the Arts, and The Dusts Institute. It represents an intersection of artistic research, architecture, and geomicrobiology.

The project consists of ‘drawing’ a 10-meter diameter circle on the façade of a housing block by removing the thin layer of microoganisms that occupy the surface of the building.

"Weisser Fleck questions what the outer surfaces of buildings need to look like in an age of climate crisis and why,” says Adam Hudec (co-author of the project). “By removing biopatina from a single building, we aim to show why these microorganisms should be embraced rather than erased, encouraging a shift from a cleanliness-based model of urban care to one that values biodiversity and resilience.”

The project was supported by KÖR and is an integral part of the research at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under the title 'Epidermitecture', led by professors Michelle Howard and Katja Sterflinger.

The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is the first University in Austria to join SOS Mitmensch's "Pass Egal Wahl" project!

A total of 31.03% of students in Austria are not entitled to vote (as of winter semester 2023/24). The Academy sees itself as an open, international and diverse place for the arts and sciences, from which important social impulses emanate. Important goals are to help shape public and political discourses and to participate in social transformations. Many of the people who study and work at the Academy of Fine Arts do not have an Austrian passport, even if they have lived here for a long time or were even born here. So it is all the more important that we bring the Pass Egal election to a university for the first time.

The Pass Egal Wahl will take place on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th of September in the Academy's Aula at Schillerplatz. This internal Project is aimed at students and staff of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

The poster is one of the two winning entries of our Student contest for this project.
it was designed by Anna-Lena Helmer, who is a Bachelor student at the Institute for Art and Architecture.

"Based on the ISOTYPE pictograms by Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz, I have chosen a contemporary interpretation that does not directly depict people, but visualizes the topic in a more abstract way. My design shows a sheet of paper in various stages of crumpling, symbolizing the idea of worthlessness and powerlessness. The image motif represents the one-third share of the voting population that is symbolically "thrown away" and "crumpled" due to the lack of voting rights. The motif attempts to take up Otto Neurath's graphic language and at the same time develop it further in order to address electoral injustice in a modern, accessible context, without direct depiction and classification into binary categories."

On the occasion of the 2024 National Council elections in Austria, we want to draw attention to the issue of growing electoral injustice and the associated democratic deficit.

All people who live in a country are crucial to life and the functioning of that country. But almost one in five people living in Austria is now excluded from democratic participation because they have the "wrong" passport. In the whole of Austria, a total of 1.5 million people of voting age are excluded! In Vienna, 33.4% of people of voting age are currently not entitled to vote! The interests of all these people are not represented in the elections in Austria. This leads to an enormous and constantly growing democratic gap and promotes alienation. The Pass Egal election sets an example for a more democratic Austria.

The poster is one of the two winning entries of our Student contest for this project.
it was designed by Jakob Grabher, who is a Master student at the Institute for Art and Architecture.

"In statistics like this, the figures are often arranged in militant rows. However, I deliberately chose a random arrangement. Almost every person who is entitled to vote is next to someone who is not. Even in the real population, most of us will know people who are not entitled to vote in Austrian national elections. This applies to all levels of education and all social classes of the population."
