Mawson Lakes Kyokushin
Welcome to Mawson Lakes Kyokushin Karate. Our classes welcome both Male and Female participants of any fitness level, aged 18+
Our aim is to increase your Fittness level, Self Defence, Self Dicipline & Self Confidence through a traditional Martial Art.
Matsushima Kyokushin Australia held its Nationals championship in Sydney on Sunday 4th August 2024, this year Feng Max was representing our dojo.
Unfortunately on arrival we found out Max did not have a fight in the Full contact Female Novice Lightweight division. This was unfortunate for Max and this is why us coaches say you need to have a go, because if you don’t you could be depriving someone else of an opportunity to compete.
In saying that Max was lucky the event organisers decided to put her into the No Contact Women’s Open and Max made it all the way to the final.
I am so proud of Max’s attitude, she had no time to adjust as the No Contact was happening almost immediately.
Sempai Aharon stepped up and assisted Max as her coach as I was busy Judging and could not even tell Max of the change (thank you Sempai Aharon).
Max did an amazing job and I could not be prouder of her attitude, effort and result in coming 2nd 🥈 in the Women’s No Contact Open especially in the final fight against a much taller 1st Kyu (Senior Brown Belt) from New Zealand.

It’s always a difficult moment when a student comes to you to say he has an exciting employment opportunity interstate.
We couldn’t be happier and prouder that he is now starting the next amazing step in his career as a researcher with CSIRO in Perth.
Whilst Dr Nguyễn Hồng Huynh was fairly quiet by nature, he had a big impact upon the dojo and those that trained with him.
He joined at the start of 2022 and hardly missed a class since beginning and he always gave it 100% and this dedication to Kyokshin saw him grade through to 6th Kyu (yellow belt) in May 2024.
In this time he traveled to and not only competed in but placed in the following tournaments:
2022 Portland OBC (Full Contact)
2nd Place Lightweight Novice 🥈
2022 Victoria Regionals Non Contact & Kata tournament
3rd Place Novice Kata 🥉
2023 Victorian Championships (Full Contact)
2nd Place Lightweight Novice 🥈
We will certainly miss him, however we wish him all the best with his new career and look forward to seeing him continue his Kyokushin journey In Perth Western Australia, and I am sure this is not the last time we will see him and we will once again train together!

On Wednesday the 26th June 2024 we had our second fight night for the year. Well done to all those who turned up, took part, and helped raise funds for the branch.
It was great to see everyone's sparring improving and fight plans coming together for the upcoming tournaments throughout the rest of the year.

Last Week on 24/06/2024 we presented Fatemeh Alimoradi with her 9th Kyu Certificate from our May 2024 grading.
Congratulations, and its great to have you back in the dojo.
We are on our way home for the 2024 Matsushima Kyokushin Australia National Camp on the Gold Coast Queensland.
It was a fantastic weekend with 80 karateka which included 36 Dan grades all from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia
South Australia was represented by 3 different dojo’s this year which was really great to see and be a part of.
This year Daniel and Hiua got to attend their first ever camp and have definitely learnt a lot more about Kyokushin and their journey within it.
They have also met some new Karateka along the way!
Thank you to Shihan Tony Bowden from Queensland for putting on a great weekend, also thanks to Hanshi Gary Viccars along with all the Shihan’s & Sensei’s for sharing their knowledge in training us over the weekend.

We held our first grading for the year on Saturday 11th of May 2024.
We would like to thank Sensei Ian (Narre Warren Dojo), Sempai Julius (Forest Dojo), and Sempai Aharon (Narre Warren Dojo) as well as Sempai Ruben and Sempai Pamelia (Brighton Dojo). We were delighted to host a student from Forest Kyokushin Karate also taking part in the grading.
We are very pleased to announce the following successful candidates:
Aden Gregor – 4th Kyu
Joseph Limcuando – 6th Kyu
Hong Huynh Nguyen – 6th Kyu
Yumeng Feng – 6th Kyu
Trent Navarro – 8th Kyu
Scott Mangnoson – 9th Kyu
Fatemeh Aglimoradi – 9th Kyu
Gobind Singh Grewal – 9th Kyu
Jiayu Liu – 10th Kyu
Le Tuong Van Vo – 10th Kyu
Mark Prevost – 10th Kyu
Jacobus Van Rooyen – 10th Kyu
Jotinder Singh – 10th Kyu
Good effort by Diell on her dry run-in preparation for grading at the end of the year.
Congratulations to all on a successful grading and a big thank you to those that travelled from interstate and those local students who also came to support those grading.
Sempai Jason
For those grading tomorrow, trust in your training that has gotten you to this point and give it your all.
Leave nothing to doubt, you should get to the end of the grading thinking and feeling you left it all on the dojo floor and that you couldn’t have given it any more than you did.
“OSU No Seishin” 👊
Today the Pooraka Farm Community Centres hosted a Family Fun Day and asked us to join in even though we have just joined them as our new training location.
Thank you to Trent Navarro and Mark Prevost for being a part of it today.
It was great to share some insight into Kyokshin training with the Pooraka community and who knows some of them might have enjoyed it enough to come and give it a try 👊
On Sunday 28th April 2024 at the Victoria, Tasmania & South Australia - Matsushima Kyokushin Australia State championships we had Sempai Hossein Sanaei representing us and competing in the Non Contact in the morning. He won his first round, but unfortunately didn’t progress after that.
We then had 3 students representing the dojo in their first everfull contact tournament.
First up in the Female Super lightweight Novice divisions was Fatima Alimoradi who fought really well for the first half, then her opponent just got the better of her in the second half of the fight and took the win.
Next was Feng Max also in the Female Super Lightweight division and Max came up against a taller opponent, however Max stuck to her game plan and executed it and timed and placed her techniques well and is now the Female Super Lightweight Novice Champion of Victoria 🏆
Next up was Scott Mangnoson in the Super heavyweight Novice division with a very strong opponent from Forest Kyokushin Karate Raj, for both their first ever Kyokushin karate tournament they both put in a great display and it was Scott that came away with the win. Scott went on from here to continue winning and is now the Male Super Heavyweight Novice Champion of Victoria 🏆
We would also like to thank Daniel Griffiths for making the effort to travel across and support the dojo and branch by being a helper at the tournament 👏
So in our only second ever Victorian championships we have come away with 2 x State Champions, thank you to them and to everyone in the dojo that helped them get there.
Lastly the day was extremely busy and hectic, so much so that we didn’t get a group picture until tonight and even this had Daniel missing from it. Also Scott had to leave to catch a flight home and missed his own trophy presentation, so the pic has his opponents and trophy 🏆 on its own in the number 1 podium spot.
Great class last night finished of with sparring leading into the Victorian Championships next week.! 👊
Change is never easy, but obstacles are put in your way so you can overcome them.
Great to see students showing up and kicking of the first week at our new homes by doing what we do best “training hard”, well done to all those that showed up and put in. A couple of short videos from tonight to follow this post.
Onwards and upwards to bigger and better things to come!
Only two weeks until the Victorian Championships, cannot wait to see those competing shine!
OSU Sempai Jason.
On Saturday 23-03-2024, Shihan Ron Jorgensen from Victoria ran the Seminar in conjunction with Mawson Lakes Kyokushin.
What a great day it was with attendees traveling from as far as Portland Kyokushin Karate Club (Shihan Ron & Sempai Debbie), Narre Warren Kyokushin Karate (Sensei Ian, Sempai Aharon, Josh, Paulina & Keelan), Warrnambool Kyokushin Karate Club (Sempai Natalie, Sempai Serina, Jane, Donna & Graham), Forest Kyokushin Karate(Sempai Julius & Irene), Corio Kyokushin Karate Sempai Roger & Alaric) in addition to two local Adelaide dojo’s: Mawson Lakes and Brighton Kyokushin Karate (Sempai Ruben & Sempai Pamelia).
The seminar covered a little (or a lot) of things new and old for everyone from white belts through to black belts and was greatly received by all. It was excellent to see two of our Kyu grades (Diel Keen & Mark Seagar) recognised for their fundraising efforts towards the branch in 2023, which went towards the Australian representatives in the Chile World Cup.
Congratulations to those that attended and took something new away from the day and a special thank you to everyone that travelled from Interstate to assist and be a part of the day. This really highlights the spirit of Kyokushin that exists within the Hanshi Gary Viccars Branch as a whole.
A special thank you to Shihan Ron Jorgensen, all visiting Yudansha and Kyu grades from the above mentioned dojos, because without all of you the day wouldn’t be as great as it was.
We had a total of 37 training on the day, including 12 black belts. This is our largest Adelaide seminar since Mawson Lakes joined the Hanshi Gary Viccars branch.
Recently we had our first 25 fight night for 2024.
It was a massive turn out.
What a great way to kick off our first of four fight nights for the year and leading into the upcoming Victorian Championships.
Everyone is improving in their fighting ability and trying new things on these nights, which is great to see.
Thanks, and well done everyone that participated.
Sempai Jason.
Video 2 of 2 showing a snapshot of some sparring during our 4 year anniversary class
Video 1 of 2 showing a snapshot of some dojo sparring during training at our 4 year anniversary class.
Monday we celebrated a milestone that’s hard to believe but we have now been open for 4 years.
Taking the time to do some reflection on this,
it’s absolutely amazing to see how far we have come in this time.
What actuslly started on night one with 2 Instructors, 1 visiting student from Narre Warren Kyokushin Karate, 1 walk in new student and 2 students that had previously trained in other Kyokushin Dojo’s, who would have though after opening and only months before Covid hit the world in 2020 it has now grown into a dojo that has approx 30 students who have made it into what it is today!
While planning for the upcoming year, I decided to do some reflecting on what the past 4 years have encompassed. Due to Covid we couldn’t travel for the first 2 years we were training, so the following information feels even more special.
We have had 18 students attend 6 interstate tournaments for an amazing total of 15 placings and 1 of those becoming a middleweight novice Australian Champion.
We have conducted 7 gradings and 56 grading certificates have been presented to successful students.
We have also hosted 3 seminars in Adelaide with local and interstate karateka and instructors attending thse.
None of this could not have been achieved without our students turning up and putting the hard work in, nor without the support of our branch Victoria, Tasmania & South Australia - Matsushima Kyokushin Australia and our branch leader Hanshi Gary Viccars!
I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for Mawson Lakes Kyokushin bring on 2024.!
Below are some pics from our anniversary class and a couple of videos will be posted after this!

This week we got to present Gobind Singh Grewal with his 10th Kyu certificate and belt which he achieved in the December 2023 Grading.
This week was our last week in the dojo for 2023.
What a great way to finish off the year by presenting the certificates, belts and stripes for those that successfully graded on 2nd December 2023 👊
We also presented the 2023 trophies for:
Most Dedicated Student of the year – Trent Navarro
Most Improved Student of the year – Mark Seager
Congratulations to both of our award recipients (Trent & Mark).
Enjoy your Christmas & New Years Eve break and time with family and friends and we will see you all back on the 15th January 2024 to kick off the new year and start turning dreams into reality!

We held our last grading for the year on Saturday 2nd December 2023.
We are so lucky to be a part of such a wonderful branch and Organisation here in Australia, once more we had strong support from Victoria including Sensei Ian (Narre Warren Dojo), Sempai Julius (Forest Dojo) as well as Sempai Roger (Corio Dojo) which was his first trip across to our dojo. We even had two students from Narre Warren Kyokushin Karate also taking part in the grading.
We are very pleased to announce the following successful candidates:
Ali Hussaini – 4th Kyu
Mark Seager – 5th Kyu
Aden Gregor – 5th Kyu
Joseph Limcuando – 7th Kyu
Hong Huynh Nguyen – 7th Kyu
Yumeng Feng – 7th Kyu
Craig Sweetman – 8th Kyu
Trent Navarro – 9th Kyu
Scott Mangnoson – 10th Kyu
Fatemeh Aglimoradi – 10th Kyu
Gobind Singh Grewal – 10th Kyu
Congratulations to all on a successful grading and a big thank you to those that travelled from interstate and those local students who also came to support those grading.

It’s often said that students come and go at different times and for various reasons but often it’s due to life’s demands and commitments.
Something that is also often said is that old students are always welcome and this week it was great to welcome Ben back into the dojo
OSU
This week we had our fourth and final 25 fight night for 2023.
Very proud of everyone that’s been a part of one or all of these nights throughout the year.
Not only are they a great night to hone your sparring/fighting skills and work on new drills, combo’s etc but they are an opportunity to do something for someone else by helping raise money for the branch in the way of getting sponsored for the rounds.
This year that money is supporting our branches fighters going to Chile 🇨🇱 in December to represent Australia 🇦🇺
So a huge thank you to each and every one of you.
Sempai Jason.
Thank you to everyone that took time out of their weekend and turned up last night Friday 6th October 2023 to our special memorial class to Honour our Hanshi John Taylor 👊
In true Hanshi style it was a cracking pace for the entire night and it wouldn’t be a Hanshi class if we didn’t finish it with some really spirited sparring and maybe a dad joke, rest easy Hanshi.
OSU Sempai Jason
Tonight the dojo celebrated Ali Hussaini’s 3rd 🥉 place and Mark Seager’s Most Spirited Fighter award from the Regional Championships
Well done to both for not only representing the dojo but for being rewarded for your hard work.
Lastly a shout out to our friends from Corio Kyokushin Karate (Shihan Scott & James) for the connection with K-JAM Signage Group for the new Banners, which look amazing.
So today both Ali Hussaini & Mark Seager represented the dojo at the Victorian Regional Championships held in Winchelsea.
Both did themselves proud in the Kata competition but came up against better opponents and fell short on the day.
When it came to the Non Contact part of the tournament both did really well, however once more two of our fighters (this time Mark & Ali) found themselves fighting each other for 3rd place.
Ali ended up with the win over Mark for 3rd place, however Mark was awarded the “Most Spirited Fighter” for the tournament.
Well done to both Ali and Mark on their achievements today.
OSU
Where has the year gone, it’s hard to believe that on 28th August we completed our 3rd night of 25 fights for 2023.
Well done to those that not only turned up and completed another 25 fights but a big thanks to all those for the continued fundraising and supporting our fighters going to Chile 🇨🇱 at the end of the year.
Keep the good work going
OSU
Sempai Jason
Congratulations to Ali Hussaini not only the first student from our dojo/club to compete at the National Championships, but the new 5th Kyu and under Middleweight Australian Champion in 2023.
All the hard work, training and dieting has gotten you there and you gave it your all on the tatami which showed by you winning all fights today by Ippon, which is no easily feat.
OSU 👊
So two months after our grading in June 2023 we are please to award Yuxin Long (Sherry) with her 10th kyu certificate and belt.
Sherry unfortunately sustained an injury during the grading, so it’s great to see her back in the dojo.
This is both a happy but slightly sad post as
Hiua Daraei who was our very first student to walk to the dojo on the night we opened and now 3 1/2 years later he relocated to the Gold Coast yesterday and is now starting the next amazing step in his career as a researcher with Griffiths University.
As much as we will miss him, we wish him all the best with his new career and look forward to seeing him continue his Kyokushin journey In Queensland and I am sure this is not the last time we will see other or train together! 👊
