We've made it to the final step in our Resiliency Optimisation Playbook! This is where the real excitement begins. With everything set up just the way you need, it's time to submit an optimisation using Optimizer™.

Once you hit submit, your optimisation runs seamlessly in the cloud, and you'll receive a link to the results visualization dashboard, Aperture. From there, you can dive into the data, with the option to export results to ArcGIS Online or Power BI. Reviewing the metrics in Optimizer™ will then help you assess the best strategies identified by the successful convergence of the optimisation.

The Optimatics Executive Leadership Team met in Milwaukee, WI a few weeks ago for their Annual Summit. Three days were spent team building and planning for the future of Optimatics using the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS).

This being the one time a year the Team meets in person, they left as a stronger, more cohesive unit. And, fun fact, as part of a greater sustainability initiative, the Team made very affordable use of 100% public transit when traveling between Chicago and Milwaukee on Amtrak trains and light rail! (Not always easy to do in the U.S.)

It’s time again to discuss our Resiliency Optimisation Playbook! Today, we are taking a closer look at Step 4: hydraulic model build/update/scenario setting.

Oftentimes, we measure resiliency by evaluating how the system performs during planned and/or unplanned outages, across seasons, during drought scenarios, or other emergency scenarios. However, the model may only simulate a 24-hour peak or average day, so at first glance, this may not seem possible. But fear not! It is possible to consider numerous scenarios within one hydraulic model and optimisation run to ensure you have an adaptable system that can operate effectively under these different conditions, but it does require some model building.

The playbook explores an example in this step that details the model buildout needed for considering a peak day and five unplanned outages, and details various challenges you may run into along with how to resolve them. Optimizer™ settings can be used to help with the resolution of these challenges along the way.

Once the model has been set up to consider these various scenarios, the next step is to examine how the existing system or proposed system performs subject to these scenarios. Once these deficiencies have been identified, you can then think about interventions. Crowdsource on this step! Don’t forget to talk to people who actually operate the system, not just the planners and engineers.

Once new interventions have been decided upon, updates may need to be made to the input model prior to importing it into Optimizer™.
