Products that are part of extensive supply chains traverse huge distances around the globe before reaching their final destinations. This process can include months of shipping, processing, packaging and storage before making it to shelves and into the hands (and stomachs) of consumers. Shorter times between harvesting and landing on the table mean the highest value of nutrition is maintained in the food; something Klavanski would like to see more of.

AgUnity have now completed the deployment of 100, specially designed smartphones to cocoa farmers in Papua New Guinea. Training on the included apps, the technology as a whole and the deployment of the phones into the community began and continues now thanks to support from our AgChampions! The first 30 farmers from PNG have been added to the Agriwards website (success!) and we look forward to the AgriUT rewards tokens flowing to this region.

Currently working closely with our partner, Madang Cocoa Company Limited (MCCL), our ambitious goal is to reach 1,000 more farmers and bring them into the landscape.

How traceable quality cocoa and decent incomes connects in Sierra Leone: Fairfood and Solidaridad West Africa were together in the field to start tracing cocoa in Sierra Leone, taking one more step to prove the business case for fair value distribution.

“Like many other producing countries, most Sierra Leonean farmers are operating in survival mode. This is an old and well-known symptom, indicating that the longevity of cocoa farming is at risk. At the early stages of our AgriUT journey we learned of the very high transaction costs and this was a significant problem for our prime objective of providing digital inclusion of poor small holder farmers. Consequently we started to look for alternatives and this is where became our choice of platforms for a number of features. Low transaction costs was an absolute necessity for the AgriUT ecosystem so as not to erode the benefits directly sent to the farmers.
