Are you sleeping on the magic of castor oil? โจโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโMade from the beans of the Ricinus communis plant, castor oil has been used in both medicinal & non-medicinal applications for centuries and boasts many benefits ranging from beauty to health ๐
So what are some of the beautiful healing uses for castor oil?
โญSkin health
The main active ingredient in castor oil is ricinoleic acid, an antioxidant-rich fatty acid that helps moisturize dry skin and lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Castor oil also has antibacterial properties, which can help with acne and even wound healing.
โญHair growth
One of castor oilโs biggest claims to fame is that it is thought to help hair grow. Itโs commonly mixed with a carrier oil like jojoba and then applied to the scalp and hair, as castor oil can be very sticky and heavy on its own.
People also put it on their brows and lashes. Use a clean mascara wand or brow brush to apply a tiny bit of oil, making sure that it doesnโt get in your eyes!!

Castor oil has been used as a home treatment for dandruff, in part because itโs believed to have antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Itโs commonly mixed with a carrier oil for this application as well.

Castor oil is perhaps best known for being a laxative. Ingesting castor oil can have some pretty nasty side effects, so itโs important not to misuse it and to check with your naturopath on dosage

Today we thought we'd open a discussion around one of the lesser-known symptoms: menopause flooding ๐
Lets do a quick refresher on menopause...
Menopause begins 12 months after a womanโs last period. Thereโs also a transition period leading up to it, called perimenopause.
Perimenopause often begins 6-7 years before your final menstrual period and then one year after. During this time, hormones like progesterone and estrogen vary a lot...
What is menopause flooding?
Menopause flooding is when you have heavy menstrual bleeding due to perimenopause. This can happen at any time, but itโs most common during puberty and perimenopause.
What is the common cause?
Around menopause, your ovaries don't consistently pop out an egg.
No egg = no progesterone being made, and the signal to shed the lining does not happen ๐ฅ
When the lining finally sheds, there is more blood/material than usual. This can also be caused by the imbalance of hormones that occur during the perimenopausal years
Women who have more estrogen could potentially be affected more, as this would result in more buildup ๐ฉธ
We do not recommend going along 'the suggested' route of hormonal birth control or IUD to accommodate these changes... counterintuitive ๐ถ

PERIODS... the Mercury retrogrades of the body?
It's a time when a lot of not-so-fun things happen
Add insomnia to the list of period-related troubles, that lovely time of the month can also make it really hard to fall asleep and stay asleep ๐
Typically, period insomnia happens during the luteal phase
The luteal phase happens between ovulation and menstruation, and is associated with PMS and PMDD.
Both PMS and PMDD can be associated with period insomnia. Essentially, if you experience either one of these disorders, you are likely to experience insomnia during your flow ๐ฉธ
Another reason could be, not producing enough progesterone. We find women that suffer from a progesterone deficiency, often experience an increase in cortisol during the luteal phase which can really affect the quality of your sleep ๐๏ธ
In other words... progesterone is a natural sedative, and cortisol depletes progesterone levels.
Therefore, anything we can do to improve our bodyโs natural production of progesterone, reduce our cortisol level, and support our adrenal glands will help with this symptoms

Our vision at Healthful is to create a nourishing environment for women from all walks of life. Our Naturopaths, Jacqui and Gemma are here to support you in the best way possible.
Jacqui specialises in symptoms such as peri to post menopause, fibroids, thyroid disorders, endometriosis, PMS and amenorrhoea.
Gemma has a keen interest for gut health, stress related disorders, teenage hormone health, pre- pregnancy support and auto-immune disease.
