Are you sleeping on the magic of castor oil? โœจโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹Made from the beans of the Ricinus communis plant, castor oil has been used in both medicinal & non-medicinal applications for centuries and boasts many benefits ranging from beauty to health ๐Ÿ’Œ

So what are some of the beautiful healing uses for castor oil?

โญSkin health
The main active ingredient in castor oil is ricinoleic acid, an antioxidant-rich fatty acid that helps moisturize dry skin and lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Castor oil also has antibacterial properties, which can help with acne and even wound healing.

โญHair growth
One of castor oilโ€™s biggest claims to fame is that it is thought to help hair grow. Itโ€™s commonly mixed with a carrier oil like jojoba and then applied to the scalp and hair, as castor oil can be very sticky and heavy on its own.

People also put it on their brows and lashes. Use a clean mascara wand or brow brush to apply a tiny bit of oil, making sure that it doesnโ€™t get in your eyes!!

โญDandruff
Castor oil has been used as a home treatment for dandruff, in part because itโ€™s believed to have antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Itโ€™s commonly mixed with a carrier oil for this application as well.

โญConstipation relief
Castor oil is perhaps best known for being a laxative. Ingesting castor oil can have some pretty nasty side effects, so itโ€™s important not to misuse it and to check with your naturopath on dosage

โญLymphatic drainage
Castor oil packs pieces of cloth soaked in castor oil and applied to the skin) are said to help stimulate the lymphatic system and boost lymphatic drainage

The carefree days of passing your bestie in the hallway, or doing your makeup together for an all-nighter are long gone. They are now replaced with grown-up worries and responsibilities.

Although keeping your friendships can be challenging, it isnโ€™t impossible with commitment, thought, and intention. You may not be able to have daily conversations, but it is important to prioritize communicating regularly.

Here are some ways to make it work:
๐ŸŒธ Routinely schedule times and days where you catch up. This lets the other person know that youโ€™re thinking of them and that youโ€™re still a consistent part of their life. Something as simple as sending texts, emails, or funny social media posts helps keep you bonded.

Lets talk about this lesser-known symptom of menopause... ๐Ÿคฏ โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹Menopause is a huge shift in every woman's life, so we urge our community to learn the menopausal symptoms, and make informed decisions based on what they experience ๐Ÿšจ

Today we thought we'd open a discussion around one of the lesser-known symptoms: menopause flooding ๐ŸŒŠ

Lets do a quick refresher on menopause...

Menopause begins 12 months after a womanโ€™s last period. Thereโ€™s also a transition period leading up to it, called perimenopause.

Perimenopause often begins 6-7 years before your final menstrual period and then one year after. During this time, hormones like progesterone and estrogen vary a lot...

What is menopause flooding?
Menopause flooding is when you have heavy menstrual bleeding due to perimenopause. This can happen at any time, but itโ€™s most common during puberty and perimenopause.

What is the common cause?
Around menopause, your ovaries don't consistently pop out an egg.

No egg = no progesterone being made, and the signal to shed the lining does not happen ๐Ÿฅš

When the lining finally sheds, there is more blood/material than usual. This can also be caused by the imbalance of hormones that occur during the perimenopausal years

Women who have more estrogen could potentially be affected more, as this would result in more buildup ๐Ÿฉธ

We do not recommend going along 'the suggested' route of hormonal birth control or IUD to accommodate these changes... counterintuitive ๐Ÿ˜ถ

Do you struggle with sleep when on your period? ๐Ÿ’คโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹SAVE ME FOR LATER ๐ŸคŽ

PERIODS... the Mercury retrogrades of the body?
It's a time when a lot of not-so-fun things happen
Add insomnia to the list of period-related troubles, that lovely time of the month can also make it really hard to fall asleep and stay asleep ๐Ÿ‘€

Typically, period insomnia happens during the luteal phase
The luteal phase happens between ovulation and menstruation, and is associated with PMS and PMDD.

Both PMS and PMDD can be associated with period insomnia. Essentially, if you experience either one of these disorders, you are likely to experience insomnia during your flow ๐Ÿฉธ

Another reason could be, not producing enough progesterone. We find women that suffer from a progesterone deficiency, often experience an increase in cortisol during the luteal phase which can really affect the quality of your sleep ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

In other words... progesterone is a natural sedative, and cortisol depletes progesterone levels.

Therefore, anything we can do to improve our bodyโ€™s natural production of progesterone, reduce our cortisol level, and support our adrenal glands will help with this symptoms
