Ever since I was a kid, dinner was always my favorite subject, and in a fortutious twist of fate, our yiayias were basically professors of Greek food! 😉

We’re proud to be able to share their authentic flavours with a modern Australian slant. ❤️

Mezes make meals a communal experience, and they are a fantastic way to explore new foods and flavours.

Just keep your eye on that friend, family or coworker who will deftly finish off all the fried cheese before you get a taste. 😉

What goes into making our Kopanisti dip?

First we roast capsicums, onions, garlic and herbs, then we blitz them in our mixer, and finally we chop chilli, crumble feta and combine 🧑‍🍳😘🤌

It was a pleasure to host renowned Clare Valley winery, Jim Barry Wines, for the launch of their 2024 Assyrtiko today.

They planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko at their Lodge Hill Vineyard in 2012, after importing cuttings from Santorini, and we just love the merging of SA soil and a Greek grape!

“You have to be a romantic to invest yourself, your money, and your time in cheese.” - Anthony Bourdain.

One day I’ll write a sonnet about our Haloumi(😉), but in the meantime I’ll just leave you with this:

Our pan-fried Haloumi is deliciously savoury, with crunchy and caramelised edges that encase a gooey and velvety creamy centre. It’s love in cheese form, and is perfect for sharing. 😍

Have you ever noticed this painting in our smallest dining room?

It’s entitled “Mulga Bill at The Greek”, and this is a bit about this piece, and why it holds a special place in our hearts.

Leo Smaniotto (who has sadly since passed away) painted Mulga Bill, a character first created by Banjo Patterson, for some 30+ years.

In these oil-on-canvas adventures, Mulga Bill visited many iconic sites around Australia, as envisioned through Leo's creative eye, and based on his experiences living as a mining engineer in Broken Hill.

His unique style proved popular with critics and consumers alike, and his paintings can often be found hanging in houses, offices and art galleries throughout Australia and abroad.

Mary, from the family who own The Greek, is best friends with Leo's daughter, Sue, and was delighted to receive "Mulga Bill at The Greek on Halifax" as a birthday gift from Leo.

Mulga Bill has taken pride of place on a wall in a cosy room in the restaurant ever since, and is a favourite amongst our patrons.

In his interpretation, Leo has taken The Greek into the outback and we see the outdoor umbrellas painted blue and white, in a nod to the colours of the Greek flag.

Guarding the front doors you will see the "Evzones" or elite presidential guard who have obviously left their post at the Presidential Mansion in Athens to protect The Greek from any bushrangers that may be lurking about - ready to poach a seafood platter or a cream kataiffi.

You will see the guard dressed in his traditional uniform complete with a crimson hat and a long black tassel, his fustanella (a kilt-like pantaloon), white stockings and red leather clogs with pom-poms.

The restaurant itself is depicted with a peaked roof and long glass windows, which are classic features of the heritage-listed building.

In an obvious hint at Leo's whimsical sense of humour, the chimney in the background is a small and willowy structure, in contrast to the imposing refuse destructor that is a feature of the restaurant's facade.

Mulga Bill's famous bicycle can be seen in the forefront of the painting, with its owner parked at a nearby table and enjoying a conversation with a friend.

In his delightfully quirky interpretation of The Greek, Leo has captured the essence of what makes the restaurant so popular - the relaxed patrons enjoying good food, wine and conversation in an enviable locale.

Have a closer look next time you visit! 😊

Some facts about our famous chimney:

- It’s 38m high and is made of around 150,000 bricks.

- It was built in 1909, and ran as the main refuse destructor for Adelaide until the 1950s, when the Wingfield landfill site was chosen.

- As you can imagine, the local residents weren’t big fans of the emissions!

- Our restaurant is in the old disinfector building, which was part of the larger complex that once was comprised of the refuse destructor, a tin bailing press, clinker paver mill, a brewery, flour mill and biscuit factory, mortar mill, boot and vinegar factories and a flag making plant.

- The Destructor worked twenty-four hours a day and the furnaces produced so much heat that the resultant steam powered an electricity generator. The generator supplied this whole site.

- The steam disinfector building (now the restaurant) was used to sterilise clothing and bedding. It would take only 15 mins in the system to complete the fumigation process. The items were then placed in a steam laundry and then pressed by electronic irons.

- For this service, individuals were charged a guinea per van-load, although for those too poor to pay, the service was free.

- Excess electricity was fed back to the Adelaide Electric Company to light the nearby streets.

Last month we showcased a very rustic, village-style Lamb Kleftiko on our Specials Menu, and now meet our modern interpretation.

Lamb, braised in red wine, and layered with herbs and vegetables, oven-baked in a delicate filo pastry parcel. Served on a tomato and basil sauce, and with roasted carrots and whipped feta. 🤌🤩
