Our Partner and Criminal Lawyer James Caldicott spoke to ABC News recently in relation to taser use by police officers in South Australia as usage more than doubles.
Below is a snippet from the article ⬇️
Lawyer James Caldicott said he supported the use of tasers on dangerous offenders but was concerned that police could be reaching for the weapon too quickly, without trying other forms of de-escalation.
"There are other ways in which police could have or ought to have dealt with an individual and we're finding unfortunately, across the board that the use of tasers is suddenly increasing, which is causing distress and harm to a number of clients," he said.
Mr Caldicott said he had also seen instances where tasers were used to make people comply with a police direction, something prohibited by most taser-use guidelines in other states.
"We've had circumstances where an arrest is being effected and the person may be hindering to a degree, and so to enable compliance, the use of a taser has been done," he said.
'Like someone squeezed the air out of my lungs': Man describes being tasered in the back by police while on crutches SA Police defends its rising use of tasers, after the ABC obtained video of officers tasering a man who was on crutches. Today, Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said he wanted officers to be safe on the job.
Adelaide’s first mobile phone detection camera has been installed on South Road, Torrensville – one of five to be rolled out across SA.
The additional locations the cameras will be installed are:
➡️ Southern Expressway, Darlington
➡️ North South Motorway, Regency Park
➡️ Port Road, Hindmarsh
➡️ Port Wakefield Road, Gepps Cross
Trials at all five spots will commence in April, before a three-month education period will operate from June. During this period, drivers will not be fined or lose demerit points.
Following this, drivers caught by a mobile phone detection camera will be fined $540 (+ $99 victims crime levy) and lose 3 demerit points.
Please take care on the roads and drive safely.

Ever wondered if the police can stop you and request your ID without reason? 🤔
Senior Partner, Casey Isaacs, clarifies this frequently asked question.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"BRILLIANT! I cannot start with anything other than that. I engaged Solicitor Casey Isaacs' help through positive word of mouth. Being a criminal matter, the worst part about it is the embarrassment! Solicitor Isaacs was the least judgemental person I have ever met. He immediately made me feel at ease, he gave me confidence on the charges brought against me without overpromising the outcome. In court it was easy to recognise he had confidence and is very well respected by both Magistrates and lawyers alike. To conclude, my criminal outcome was nothing short of exceptional. Solicitor Isaacs was amazing. If anybody needs help with anything regarding any criminal matter please see this individual!"

🚗🚫 Don't risk it! Driving under the influence is a no-go, regardless of how sober you feel.
Drink driving is term commonly used to describe the two drinking and driving offences under the Road Traffic Act 1961 (SA):
🍺 Driving with a prescribed concentration of alcohol in the blood (PCA) [s 47B]; and
🍺 Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI) [s 47].
It is also an offence to refuse to comply with directions in relation to a breath test (Refusing to Blow) [s 47E].
The law is strict as to the amount of alcohol that can be present in a person’s blood when driving. For full license holders, the maximum blood alcohol level is 0.05. Learners and provisional license holders must have zero alcohol in their blood while driving.

James Caldicott and Emily Cousins are making their mark in the legal system.
They recently spoke to the Advertiser, to discuss what set them on the path to law.
⚖️ James Caldicott
James joked that “nepotism” is the reason for his pathway to becoming Partner at Caldicott + Isaacs. But, he used UniSA’s trimester system to graduate faster before working alongside his father, Craig Caldicott.
He took up other avenues of work to hone his skill set out of courtroom advocacy, including joining the RAAF Reserves as a lawyer and doing delegate work for SAAFL and SANFL as a player and league advocate.
⚖️ Emily Cousins
For Emily, it was the unusual combination of a love for legal studies and a background in performing arts which led her to the law.
After discovering criminal defence at a previous workplace, Emily joined Caldicott + Isaacs, where she carved a niche in the ever expanding area of criminal asset confiscation matters.
Emily lists some of her proudest achievements as working with the best legal minds in the state, including David Edwardson KC and the late Mark Griffin QC.
