'THE VEIL' WRAP-UP
Let's take a closer look at THE VEIL, our recent co-production with UFFO Trutnov for the Cirk-UFF festival in Trutnov, Czech Republic.
First a reflection from Director Joshua H***e:
"Death and Dying. We've lost so many rituals in our developed world, and pathologised both of them to be as distant from our lived experience as possible.
My solution, take the most beautiful requiem there is, Gabirel Fauré's, combine it with the most beautiful acrobatic and musical team, and give death all the majesty, light and life I can.""
Between life and death, there exists a delicate boundary—a "Veil" that is both universal and personal. This new work set the task of bridging the majesty and grandeur of Fauré's requiem with our all too human personal experiences of grief and dying.
Chamber circus is the perfect medium for that. It is personal and intimate. In the acrobats we see our own stories of love, grief, and connection. Between recreated classical statues, oil paintines, cadaver slapstick and bodies disintegrating to ash, we witness the humanity in this all too human experience of losing someone, and one day, losing ourselves.
Acrobats of the lungs Libor Kasik and Stanislava Kozubíková sung solos through the work ranging from the Requiem itself, to popular inclusions that represented the songs with less pomp and ceremony that we dedicate to loved ones gone. These included Czech folk songs (Kdo má pocernu galanku, Letêla bêlounka) and the people's favourites, My Way and Somewhere over the rainbow. Perfect additions to Fauré's mass for the departed, showing death as a transition to peace and rest, rather than something to fear.
What a perfect premiere in Trutnov with encores and standing ovations. We will post more from this stunning production soon!

Here's a great InDaily article about Artistic Director Josh H***e's involvement with a new ActNow Theatre project for schools.
'When [Yasmin] Gurreeboo became a leader of ActNow in 2021, she quickly began looking into ways the company – which has a focus on social impact – could address domestic violence.
A conversation with Cirkidz artistic director Josh H***e about parenting young boys became the first step in the journey toward spotlighting the issue on stage.
“We found common ground wanting to look at, well, what are things that are important for particularly young boys to know about healthy relationships and how to have greater emotional literacy?,” says Gurreeboo.'
