๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿงš Lelo visited the clinic today for a routine dental scale and polish, which includes full mouth x-rays! This helps us to look for any concerns below the gum line such as bone loss, and inside the tooth itself such as resorptive lesions. Resorptive lesions start as small holes in the structure of the teeth which progress in size over time and cause large defects.. and pain! ๐Ÿฉน Leloโ€™s x-rays were beautiful, and he woke with fresh, pearly whites! ๐Ÿงผ๐Ÿชฅ

Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

โ„๏ธInsulationโ„๏ธ
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

โ˜€๏ธWarmer climatesโ˜€๏ธ
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably wonโ€™t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

๐Ÿ’šKeep your pet inside
๐Ÿ’šProvide a warm, soft, elevated bed
๐Ÿ’šWarm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
๐Ÿ’šMove your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
๐Ÿ’šProvide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
๐Ÿ’šKeep all bedding dry
๐Ÿ’šWrap a loose blanket over your pet, but donโ€™t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
๐Ÿ’šWalk your furry friend during the day when itโ€™s not as cold

๐Ÿšจ Attention Pet Owners! ๐Ÿšจ

Emergency and Specialty Vets are sounding the alarm about the rise in paralysis ticks affecting our pets. ๐Ÿพ With the unseasonal warmth lingering into autumn and rain, the conditions are ripe for these dangerous pests.
At Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford, several beloved pets have tragically lost their lives due to severe tick paralysis. Dr. Natashia Evans, an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at ARH Gosford, emphasises the importance of year-round parasite prevention, even as we transition into winter.

Skipping prevention can lead to devastating consequences.
Even a delay of just one or two days can put your pet at risk. Set reminders, and if in doubt, administer prevention a couple of days early.

Pet owners are urged to perform daily tick checks, as early detection can save lives.

For emergency assistance, contact your nearest animal hospital: https://www.emergencyvet.com.au/contact-us.html

๐Ÿ’š As winter sets in and the temperature drops, vets often see an increase in arthritis cases in both young and old animals. Sadly, the majority of these pets go undiagnosed and untreated as their owners donโ€™t understand the reality of this condition. However, pets experience real pain with arthritis, comparable to the pain experienced by humans with this disease.

๐Ÿ’š Early detection and proactive treatment are essential to ensure your petโ€™s comfort and quality of life as they age.

๐Ÿ’š If you would like to know more, contact your local Greencross Vets for more information.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dr Kristie Remmert, Veterinary Director located at our Greencross Vets clinic in Deeragun, Townsville who passed away on Sunday 28 January.
In memory of Kristie, we honour a life dedicated to the love and care of animals. Her passing leaves a void in the veterinary community, marked by the loss of someone whose dedication to animals transcended her professional duties.

Kristie joined Greencross in May of 2020 as a new Graduate at Greencross Willows and Aitkenvale, in Townsville. She then spent a significant amount of time, working at Greencross Maitland where she was a key member of the team and community. In 2023 she then returned to Townsville joining the Deeragun team. Kristie has been an outstanding veterinarian across her entire tenure at Greencross, receiving the โ€œVeterinarian Associate of the Year โ€“ North Queenslandโ€ in August of 2023, which led to her accelerated career progression and appointment of Vet Director of Deeragun in August 2023.

Our deepest condolences extend to Kristie's family and friends, and to the entire Greencross Vets team, who have all been informed and are receiving the support they need during this difficult time.

In these challenging moments, we encourage anyone in need of support, both within and outside the veterinary community, to reach out. Lifeline can be contacted at 13 11 14, and for our veterinary colleagues, the Australian Veterinary Association counselling support is available at 1300 687 327.

Funeral Notice for the Late Kristie Louise Remmert โค๏ธ
All Family and Friends are warmly invited to attend Kristieโ€™s Funeral Service which will commence at;
๐Ÿ•ฐ 10.00 a.m. Tuesday Morning 13th February, 2024
Lakes Chapel, Morleys Funeral Home
๐Ÿ“ Cnr. Hugh Street and Martine Avenue, Townsville.

For guests unable to attend, Kristieโ€™s Service will be live streamed via www.morleys.net.au/live-streaming.html
A wake has been arranged at the Bushland Beach Tavern for the afternoon, and I would love anyone who would like to, to attend and spend some time reflecting on her beautiful life and sharing stories of her.
