Having recently graduated with a Masters in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Curtin University, Jessamy is very excited to join our great team and relocate to Albany. During her years of study and practical placements Jessamy gained experience with prescribing the best exercise for many health conditions. She has an interest in exercise for musculoskeletal, metabolic, respiratory, oncology and cardiac.

Outside work, she enjoys anything outdoors with her favourites being hiking, kayaking and swimming. She has also played hockey since she was seven so should fit straight into the Albany hockey scene.

Jessamy will be available for consulting from Tuesday 24 September.

Experienced Remedial Massage Therapist Emanuel Cheng is treating from our clinic now. He moved from Canada almost 5 years ago where he worked with Athletics Canada and travelled to international competitions as a member of the support
team (there were 8 athletes competing at the Olympics in Paris that were on teams he worked with). He worked with University teams in Ontario before moving to Vancouver and provided treatments for players on the Vancouver Whitecaps FC - the city's Major League Soccer team.

He is a registered provider - treatments are claimable with all major health funds (see pics for list of health funds). All bookings must go directly via the online link below:

Cardiovascular (or aerobic) fitness is arguably the most important modifiable risk factor for good health and longevity - and yet is rarely measured, and generally not in a GP setting. Below is a now-healthier 75 year old's fitness progression over 12 months, from 'average' to 'excellent' for his age and gender while following a home-based exercise program from our EPs. Our exercise physiologists can assess capacity with treadmill walking or stationary cycling and it usually takes about ten minutes. Estimated Peak VO2 is the measurement used - and keeping it above about 18ml/kg/min is said to allow an individual to maintain independent living.

John practices what he preaches as an exercise physiologist by walking when he has to do longer blocks of office work - he finds his back doesn’t ache nearly as much as if he sits for too long. There is also strong evidence that breaking up sitting time during the day, even briefly, lowers a lot of health risks associated with being sedentary.

Today Danielle Carne, Executive Officer, Great Southern Academy of Sport (GSAS) came to meet our team and chat about how we can continue to best help our local outstanding young sportspeople chase their high-performance aspirations. Interestingly, all our SCSM team members pictured below have represented Australia internationally at elite level in sport and so have more than just a (great) clinician's perspective upon training & recovery. Importantly, they have lived experience of the need for all aspects of an athlete's life-training balance to be considered for optimal long-term continuation in sport and ultimately, that sought-after high-performance outcome. Training, competing, sleep, school, work, travel, nutrition, pre-hab, rehab, social... the list goes on!

A wonderful heart-warming moment for us today when one of our regular Supervised Strength Training participants gave us flowers and a card for her 80th birthday. She first came in early 2020 with heart and lung problems and was physically somewhat frail. Now she’s back to bushwalking and in the gym is pulling, pushing and carrying some good heavy weights.
We keep saying it, but ‘Exercise is Medicine’.

This week our team education session was about all things paddle sports - kayak, canoe, ocean ski, surf ski, SUP, dragonboat, raft. John discussed training, technique and the most common injuries. Paddling can be a great way to stay fit and gain great core strength but is also a good alternative fitness activity for people who have lower limb injuries.
