Take a look at this new production stand of UMS Estancia Fescue located in Cressy, Tasmania. We like to sow some of our perennial grass production crops in wide rows for effective inter-row and spot spraying. This helps ensure the cleanliness of the stand and maintains our high purity standards.
As a vertically integrated company, UMS seed is often grown on one of our production farms, which gives us more control and enables us to deliver the quality that UMS seed is known for.

This week the UMS Research Station was visited by the Historical Society searching for wartime farming photos.
Our Research Station has a long and storied history in Australian agriculture opening in 1937 with a focus skilling young farmers, researching the latest crops for local production and serving as a training facility for the Australian Women's Land Army during Wold War Two.
Just like today, breeding, reselection and multiplication of species was a major focus of the research program.
Wheat varieties were developed including Condor and Egret, along with new oats such as Esk and Garry, and Proctor and Franklin barley. A major new pea cultivar bred and released at the time was Cressy Blue Peas which replaced Prussian Blues.
Foundation crops of new pasture varieties bred on the Station included Tas No. 1 and Tasdale ryegrass, Cressy cocksfoot and the newest line of improved cocksfoot yet seen, Porto!
As custodians of the Research Station, UMS is proud to continue this tradition of research and development excellence and we look forward to writing the next chapter in this important facilities history.
Spring is in the air and now is the time to start thinking about getting your UMS SilverLand GT5 Lucerne in the ground!
SilverLand GT 5 is an extremely persistent lucerne that can withstand significant grazing pressure.
Due to its high levels of disease and pest resistance itโs a long-term crop option for any lucerne producer.
๐ฑ Highly productive, palatable and persistent
๐ฑ Purpose-bred to resist common diseases and pests
๐ฑ Predominately used for summer forage
๐ฑ Suitable for long-term set-stocking
Visit www.uppermurrayseeds.com.au/silver-lucerne for more information
Its great to see our varieties performing in the paddock and thanks Bec for sharing your thoughts. This is a message we hear from our farmers and agronomists often. Allure Italian is the leader in the late Italian space for persistence, first to grazing and winter growth! For those looking to spring sow an Italian donโt miss out on your opportunity with Allure.
AG warehouse has a pasture demo site in the Kiewa valley. This particular site held a number of dairy heifers over summer and did not get a good โrest periodโ. We left some Italians and hybrids to carry over into their second year.
This is a rep of Allure Italian ryegrass, we have been exceptionally suprised by the plant population that survived into the second year.
The site didnโt get and autumn break and was heavily grazed over summer.

UMS is part of the Tooma Group which operates R&D, production facilities, and farms across Tasmania, Victoria and NSW. Last week we had the pleasure of showcasing our NSW operation to Jono, Izzy and Laing from Kober/Echuca Ag, Horse & Pet .
We started our tour in Albury at the UMS warehouse and seed mixing facility, then ventured to Corryong to explore our seed cleaning plant and finished at Tooma Station and the nearby demo plots currently under development.
Because UMS is a vertically integrated operation, we can showcase to our clients the entire lifecycle of the seed production process from R&D, demo plots, production paddocks, seed cleaning and mixing through to the end product.
If you're a farmer, agronomist or one of our retail partners, we would welcome the opportunity to show you around some time!
A big thank you to Tom Dempster, Farm manager at Tooma Station for hosting the tour.
It was a really interesting day, shared with some wonderful people. The Upper Murray at its finest for them!

It was a pleasure to welcome the Ag Enterprise students from Launceston Grammar to the UMS Research Station at Cressy, Tasmania yesterday.
Led by teacher, Tanya Beaumont the students focused on plant breeding, climate aware pastures and commercialisation of new seed lines.
Working around a very wet and windy day, it was a great morning and UMS is so pleased to host Tasmanian students interested in Agriculture!
JR AG Contracting based in South East Tasmania have selected UMS Torpedo Annual Ryegrass for its fast establishment and excellent winter growth, "We're loving Torpedo and having a lot of success so far on our share farming properties," said Jonty.
The torpedo was sown at 22kg/ha with a disc drill and is used mainly for spring grazing for both calves, ewes and lambs. It is also managed for a potential hay cut late in the season.
If you you're interested in finding out more about Torpedo and how it could benefit your farming operation, call (02) 6040 6464 to connect with your local UMS Area Manager.

This excellent stand of SilverLand GT5 Lucerne at Gerogery in NSW highlights the grazing tolerance of our Silver Lucernes, and illustrates why they are recognised across Australia.
This stand of Silverland GT5 was sown in March 2023 and cut for hay in October that year. With a challenging dry season the farmer decided to dedicate the paddock for confinement feeding. For 4.5 months from March his sheep grazed this hard, in conjunction with supplementary feeding. Look at the before and after photos, the plant numbers and the phenomenal recovery and growth. A real testament to the breeding of SilverLand GT 5.

AberGain AR1 High Sugar Perennial Ryegrass is at the top of the menu for a herd of dairy cows at Purnim in SW Victoria. When they were moved to a paddock of non UMS perennial ryegrass the farmer said โThey didn't touch it and spent most of their time looking back over the fence at the AberGain!โ
AberGain AR1 is a tetraploid high sugar ryegrass, specifically bred for higher sugar levels (ie water-soluble carbohydrates), than traditional perennial rye. These cows really knew what they liked.

Despite the cold weather at the UMS Research Station, our Annual and Italian ryegrass trials are progressing well.
They are headed for their second dry matter cut and we hope to achieve nine or ten cuts in total by New Year.
The UMS R&D Team conduct extensive trials over many seasons, not only on UMS Proprietary Varieties but also on other varieties in the market. So when we say our varieties are market-leading you can be sure we have the science and data to back it up.
Check out the difference between UMS Lavish Forage Oats on the right and another popular forage variety on the left. Both were planted at the same time and have received the same water and spraying program. Lavish is the clear winner here, demonstrating excellent coverage, prolific tillering and strong initial growth.
Lavish has been extensively evaluated in Australian field trials over many years. It's an outstanding performer when compared to current market-leading varieties!

This stand at Yulgilbar Station in northern NSW, clearly shows why we chose "Torpedo" for the name of our most recent tetraploid annual ryegrass! Only three weeks after first grazing and it's ready to go again!
The stand was sown with 80kg/ha DAP, irrigated and was topdressed after first graze with Urea at a rate of 150kg/ha.
Thanks to Murray Connor, Agronomist at Nutrien Ag Solutions - Grafton for sharing.
