Albury Conservation Company

Imagine if in 30 or 40 years from now we could look back with pride on the urban growth of Albury Wodonga and say “we did it!”.

Established in 2006, Albury Conservation Company is a not-for-profit community organisation helping to protect threatened species and and enhance the natural environment of Albury Wodonga, Australia’s 20th largest city. Not only did we accommodate 50,000 new residents, but we did this without sacrificing the threatened species that also call Albury Wodonga home. This monumental challenge is what d

Strong progress – from a low base: here’s what’s in NSW’s biodiversity reforms 04/08/2024

The NSW Minns Government has committed to a wide range of major nature law reforms, beginning with overhauling the state’s biodiversity offsets system. The promises include adopting 49 of 58 recommendations made by a damning 2023 independent review, either in full or in part. However, there are still important gaps, such as not going far enough to curb native vegetation clearing which remains a primary driver of biodiversity loss in the state.

Strong progress – from a low base: here’s what’s in NSW’s biodiversity reforms Koalas in trouble, land clearing at speed – nature in New South Wales is not well. Now the government is proposing significant changes to its ineffective biodiversity laws.

Happy National tree day!
Trees form such important habitat for our arboreal mammals including the Squirrel glider (Petaurus norfolcensis).
Protecting current and planting more trees to ensure habitat availability and connectivity into the future is critical in the efforts to protect and conserve threatened species.

Our Story

Imagine if in 50 years that we could reflect on the urbanisation of Albury Wodonga and say WE DID IT!

Not only did we significantly expand Australia’s 20th largest city, accommodating an extra 100,000 new residents, but we also avoided sacrificing the unique wildlife species that also call Albury Wodonga home. Species like the Squirrel Glider, Sloane’s Froglet and many others.

This is the vision of the Albury Conservation CO LTD (ACC).

We know that this won’t happen by chance. We need to put a number of critical things in place right now:

– CAREFUL PLANNING to protect habitat, in reserves and in areas zoned for future development where possible.

– SCIENTIFIC MONITORING of threatened wildlife, to ensure viable populations are maintained and to raise the alarm if populations are decreasing.

– ON GROUND ACTION to protect, improve, and connect wildlife habitat.

– WHOLE OF COMMUNITY ownership of the challenge.

We are a not-for-profit community organisation established in 2006 to help protect and enhance the natural environment of Thurgoona /Wirlinga in NSW, and to raise community awareness and engage the community in protecting biodiversity for future generations.

ACC builds partnerships with key stakeholders (e.g. Councils) to combine resources and improve communication and planning. We invest our own funding and attract external funds into local conservation projects. We also engage with our local communities to raise awareness and encourage involvement in the conservation of local wildlife and their habitats.

We are a registered environmental organisation, eligible to receive tax deductible donations through the ‘Thurgoona Biodiversity Trust and Public Fund’.

The animal in the Albury Conservation Company’s logo is the Squirrel Glider (Petaurus norfolcensis), a tree dwelling native mammal which lives in tree hollows and nest boxes and glides from tree to tree. Squirrel Gliders are a listed threatened species in NSW and endangered in Victoria. Albury Wodonga is very fortunate to have a very significant population. Maintaining viable populations of Squirrel Gliders and other threatened species, such as the Sloane’s Froglet, is a primary focus of ACC.

In 2018, after years of planning and investing in research, Albury Conservation Company began a Squirrel Glider Monitoring Program in Thurgoona / Wirlinga. In 2020, we are expanding the program into Wodonga forming a cross-border program unlike anything before it.
