Hey TACA Members! At this year's AGM, we're chatting with Bernard Kerr and Matt Russellabout WEDGE, the 2025 Australian Ceramics Triennale in Fremantle / Walyalup, hosted bythe Ceramics Arts Association in Western Australia (CAAWA).

WEDGE, Wildflowers & Walyalup šŸŗšŸŒ¼šŸŒŠ

Every Triennale is deeply informed by the place in which it is held. WEDGE has also foundinspiration from the Indian Ceramics Triennale, held in early 2024 and attended by Bernardand Matt.

How has this experience informed their vision? Who will we meet from our broaderregion and what themes do they want to explore? Are there other venues and groupsinvolved in the program?

And the wildflowers! WEDGE is on from 2ā€“5 October, the season traditionally known asKambarang, and famous for its flush of endemic wildflowers. If you're curious about a trip
next year to WA, tune in!

āž”ļø If you have a Full Membership with TACA, a link to register on Zoom has been emailed toyou! We hope youā€™ll be there.

NATIONAL EDUCATION PICTORIAL SURVEY

The materials that we work with hold a huge amount of meaning, but they also ask many questions. Our theme for this issue of The Journal of Australian Ceramics is MATERIAL EDUCATION, and our contributors have contemplated earnestness and value, materials, people, communication, and much more. We dive into education through embodiment, place, and technique, consider legacy and responsibility, trace our materials back in time and location, and look into algorithm changes. This issue also includes our national education survey. The question of who has access to ceramic education, where, and how, lingers. Accessibility and what we want for the future are important questions of our time.

Featured in JAC 632: Tyza Hart, Sturt, woodfiring education, The Torch, ceramic practice online, Sarah Christie, Coomaditchie, TABLED exhibition review, Sue Peachey, Steph Wallace, The Material Provenance Project, Bismuth, David Walker interviewed, Yuro Cuchor, Nathan Nhan, Clay Gulgong, NATSIAA, Tracy McDowall, Bruce Nuske, Mish Meijers, Juyeon Kim, Juliet Tang, and tributes to Barry Singleton and Jane Burns AM.

From the Editor: The domestic can be a place of comfort, or conflict, or both. It is a place of thinking and attitude-forming, and, if we are fortunate, a place of rest. In trying to find a way through this issueā€™s theme DOMESTIC MATERIAL, I am left dwelling on questions ā€“ what conversations are we having? What material furnishes the inner spaces of our hearts and minds?

In this issue there is intimacy in exhibition themes and profiles, cultural memory in current tableware, the domesticity of furniture, and a kiln fired with a domestic waste product ā€“ vegetable oil.

Featured in JAC 631: Penny Evans, Claire G. Coleman, Ruby Yu-Lu Yeh, doĀ° Pottery, Room23 Ceramics, Wonki & J Ceramics, Ellis Moseley and Mark Jones, Ian Jones, Georgia Zoric, Sean Miller, Tina Baum, Kirk Winter, Kaz Davis, Danish Quapoor, Parker Lev Dupain and Kate Jones, Dee Taylor-Graham, Everything Flows, Elaine Kim, Mikaila Rodgers, Siliceous Award for Ceramic Excellence, Hannah Vorrath-Pajak, Sarah Stubbs, Angie Russi, Belmont Potters Group, and the TABLED exhibition catalogue.

The Journal of Australian Ceramics welcomes contributions ā€“ we encourage both experienced and emerging writers, and contributions on all aspects of Australian ceramics.

If you are interested in contributing to the Journal the first step is to get in touch with the Editor via email with your pitch, idea or questions about contributing: [email protected]

Articles can take a variety of formats and may focus on a specific technical aspect of ceramic practice, highlight individuals working in our field, share a personal story, or approach ceramics from a new perspective. Criteria for publication include relevance to ceramics in Australia, and the inclusion of a diverse range of voices, practices, and locations across our ceramics community. The Editor provides support and guidance on publication specifications. Contributions to the Journal can be as short as 300 words, and as long as 3000 words.

If you have a burning opinion, you may also like to write for our WEDGE section. WEDGE is an opportunity to share a personal take, a particular concern, a thought or a feeling in words only (no images). It is hoped that WEDGE may enliven conversation and voice some of the wide variety of ideas, concerns, or opinions within our field.

Fostering a lively, engaged ceramics community throughout Australia.

The Australian Ceramics Association fosters a lively, engaged ceramics community throughout Australia.

We publish The Journal of Australian Ceramics, organise nationwide open studio events, support ceramic artists in their studio practice and advocate for excellence in ceramics education and training. We work to spread the excitement and passion of ceramics throughout Australia so that everyone has the opportunity to recognise, experience and value ceramics in their daily lives.

In 1956, The Potters Society of Australia was formed to encourage and foster the development, appreciation and recognition of potters and pottery. It was the first ceramics organisation in Australia. In 2006, our name was changed to The Australian Ceramics Association (TACA) to more fully reflect the scope of practice of the members. We are a national, not-for-profit organisation.
