Soluble and insoluble fibre - both work in different ways to support digestive health, bowel movements, feed our healthy bacteria and support our brain chemical production... these are some of the ingredients in my most favourite fibre packed slice! Make sure you have good gut health before you start delving into a high fibre diet... if your guts not ready for high fibre you will be very uncomfortable, windy, crampy and either constipated or have loose stools. Support your gut health by adding in more fibre slowly, start with vegetables and cooked gluten free grains e.g. oats, quinoa, buckwheat, chia seeds and then increase with fibres like psyllium husks, nuts and seeds, lentils and beans, then raw grains.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Some people are great with a high fibre diet straight away but if increasing fibre causes pain, bloating and discomfort you will need to do some gut repair first then reintroduce your fibres!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Its a double wammy with this one, if you are anxious you will increase your stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline which contribute to leaky gut and a poor microbial balance in your gut... and the same goes if you have leaky gut your good gut bacterial microbiome will be diminished and your calming brain chemicals will be lower and your brain will be wanting to switch in to "fight flight".... learn more about mood and gut health in our next course starting mid Jan. Did you know our colon has the largest population of bacteria in the body! There are a variety of factors that can influence our microbiota (gut bacteria), including birth delivery mode (vaginal or c-section), breastfeeding, weaning age, the use of antibiotics, diet, exercise, stress and disease. Being present in a moment. Not often do we stop and sit still. Our digestion is at its best in our "rest + digest' parasympathetic nervous system. Have you ever had a ‘gut-wrenching’ experience? Do certain situations make you feel nauseous? Have you ever felt ‘butterflies in your stomach? We use these expressions for a reason. Our gut is sensitive to emotions: anger, anxiety, sadness, happiness – all of these feelings (and others) can trigger symptoms in the gut and vice versa.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The very thought of eating releases the stomach’s digestive juices before food even gets to the mouth! Have you ever thought about lemons and your mouth watered? This connection goes both ways. An anxious gut can send signals to the mind just as an anxious mind can send signals to the gut.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Butterflies in your stomach can be a very normal gut-mind response if it's short-lived as being nervous is normal, if the sensation lingers and is associated with other symptoms such as overthinking, worry, jittery, shortness of breath and feeling overwhelmed that you actively can't relieve then this is most likely your nervous system switching into its "fight-flight" response which decreases digestion and increases our stress hormones. Mindfulness and Meditation can have a dramatic effect on decreasing the time we are in our "fight-flight" response. In the HGHM program, we teach you how to introduce mindfulness into your daily routine along with guided meditations to switch you into "rest + restore".⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

"Twenty-five hundred years ago, when Hippocrates stated that “All disease begins in the gut”, he had an incredible intuition that only recently has been fully appreciated because of new insights into the pathogenesis of many chronic inflammatory diseases that we are now starting to realise do begin in the gut. Our gut microbiome and immunity play a big role in "health" or disease and an exciting discovery was of a molecule called Zonulin which is high in inflammatory disease and actively works to increase intestinal permeability (disruption of our Tight Junctions) recognising that there is a physiological process for "Leaky Gut".⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
