On this Dementia Action Week (16-22 September)it is important to understand that Normal ageing is a natural and gradual process characterised by predictable, age-related changes in the body and mind. It includes mild memory lapses, reduced physical agility, and slower processing speed.

In contrast, Dementia represents pathological conditions that disrupt normal bodily functions. It can happen to people of all ages. Conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson are not “normal” aspects of aging. They result from underlying neurological disorders.

Diseases often exhibit more severe and debilitating symptoms, including profound cognitive impairment, motor dysfunction, and significant quality-of-life declines.

Distinguishing between normal aging and disease is crucial for early diagnosis and intervention to manage and treat the specific conditions that cause health issues as we age.

Visit Dementia Australia link for a full range of resources and information on the different types of dementia:

When we are stressed, upset or anxious our breaths become shorter, our heart rate increases, we can’t think clearly, our emotions become unregulated and it reduces oxygen intake to the brain.

Practice a pause, feel your body’s reactions or sensations. Take a big deep breath and release slowly. Oxygenation of the brain relieves anxiety, increases circulation, and increases muscular relaxation. Self soothing activities help to regulate your nervous system. For more support book online today. Appointments available.
