While we love that organic beauty products are made with pure ingredients from plants, flowers and foods, it also means that they’ll go bad more quickly than conventional products. With out preservatives the shelf life of your product shortens.
If you can’t remember how long ago you opened that eye cream or body lotion, do a sniff test. Toss out anything that smells funky, has separated (unless that’s common for that particular product) or has changed color. Just because you can’t smell anything though, doesn’t mean it hasn’t gone bad. A product can still go sour or lose its potency without any noticeable change in appearance, color or smell.
Most products typically expire after 12 months. You can also use our guide below as a general guideline for the shelf life of your beauty products.

Shampoos and conditioners
These products typically stay good for about two years. Make sure to keep water out of them to keep them fresh longer.

Soaps and bath gels
The shelf life for soaps and shower gels is typically one to two years.

Moisturizers
Facial moisturizers typically stay good for six months to one year after opening.

Body lotions
Use up your lotions before six months.

Deodorant
Natural deodorants will start to lose their effectiveness after six months to one year.

Sunscreen
All sunscreen products are required to list an expiration date on their labels.

Mascara, eye creams, eye shadow
Most natural eye makeup stays good for three to six months. Err on the side of caution and use eye products quickly.

Lip balm
Natural lip balms stay good for about one year. Keep in mind tins of lip balm may not stay as fresh, depending on how clean your fingers are digging into them.

Safflower oil is found to be ideal for improving the quality and texture of skin due to the abundance of linoleic acid. Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums here on this earth and those that have passed. Those incredible women who have nurtured and supported their children, fur babies, family, friends, nieces, cousins and neighbours.

Mothers Day is this Sunday in Australia, a time that can be a little triggering as the little girl (boy) inside you can start to feel into the disappointments of childhood come to the surface.

Our Mothers have all let us down at some point by not being what we wanted them to be, not giving us what we needed, not saying the exact thing we needed to hear or just not being the Mum we truly desired.

It’s a time when we might look around at all the other Mothers out there will deep longing for the way they interact with their children and feel unseen, unknown and unloved by our own Mother even more.

Our Mothers, whilst completely hopeless at times, were coming from generations of hurt, fear, patriarchy, power, religion, control, wars, etc.

They carried the same burdens, fears and the same broken pieces of their mothers and of the community of mothers around them.

Send them love….

Send them love for everything they are,

Send them love for everything they are not,

Send that little girl (or boy) inside that longed for something more...love her a thousand times more this weekend.

Choose to look at your own Mother with your inside eyes, the ones that can feel. Look at her with compassion, empathy and kindness. See her beyond the way she acts from fear, lack and scarcity.

Send her gratitude for being strong enough to carry you into this world and for holding your hand in the best way she knew how.

Send her thanks for being just as she was, so that you learnt how to fly with your own majestic wings.

With the devastating flooding on the East Coast of Australia, my heart and prays go out for Lismore & other parts of the Northern Rivers, for some they have lost every thing, for others though nature still will be a on going struggle as mould invades the surface, walls and ceilings of homes, where moisture will be hard to get rid of, so I thought it would come in handy to look at how to clean off mould that is bound to be showing up around the home.

Cleaning expert and co-author of Spotless, Shannon Lush, recommends oil of clove for cleaning mould from hard surfaces. She suggests you first clean the surfaces with a mixture of 4 litres of hot water, 1 tablespoon bicarb of soda and half a cup of vinegar. Then, mix a quarter teaspoon of clove oil per litre of water, put it in a spray bottle, lightly mist on moldy surface. Leave for 20 minutes and wipe off. Spray again and leave. It will take between 24-48 hours for the mould spores to dry and drop off. Please use a mask when tackling any heavy mould infestation, spores can trigger health problems for lungs and respiratory system.

Ventilation is a must so open windows, have exhaust fans or ceiling fans on, even the dry cycle of the air con all helps.

With my love of essential Oils I am happy to share a Mould Spray that I have used with a lot of success on painted walls, ceilings and skirting boards. Please do a patch test if in doubt of surface.

Ingredients
1 Spray Bottle
2 cups white vinegar
15 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
15 drops Wild Orange Essential Oil
15 drops Clove Essential Oil
5 drop Oregano Essential Oil
Instructions: Wear a dusk mask to avoid mould spores.
Mix all ingredients together and shake well before use.
Spray over affected area and leave to soak for about 5-10 minutes. If able. Rinse well with water, or wipe clean with a damp cloth. Dry the area thoroughly.
NOTE: This is NOT recommended to use on stone or granite benches as the vinegar may cause some damage over time. If using on grout, make sure to rinse really well with clean water.
