"My favourite thing about barre society are the Rise classes! I love how I can bring my kids along and have them right there beside me, there's not a lot of places in Bendigo that allow that once they're crawling. I love that not only am I getting a workout in, but I'm also showing my kids the importance of exercise and to also enjoy it!
I also love that it's such a warm and welcoming environment, and everyone is so friendly and supportive.

Since starting regular classes I am feeling less achy, especially in my lower back. I feel stronger and I have noticed a boost in my mood, energy and motivation, especially on the days I exercise!

Before I had children I did more high impact exercise. I love how Pilates is more gentle on my joints whilst also being effective."

"I decided to try barre because I wanted to find a form of exercising that was effective at building strength and tone but was gentle and fun enough to keep me motivated. That’s exactly what I found at Barre Society.⁠

I had never found a form of exercise that I stuck with for more than a few months but I have now been involved with barre for over 2 years!⁠

Meet Marianne 🤩

"When I was half the age I am now, I was physically fit. I used to do a lot of Tai Chi practice and for several years I was a professional life model. However, now that I have turned 70 I am no longer that fit nor supple. I have tried going to various gyms, but I never felt comfortable, I hated the thumping loud music and usually stopping attending after half a dozen times. Since Covid I did very little physical exercise. In February 2023, I went with my brother on a beach holiday. My brother is 3 years older and could easily step from rock to rock, keeping his balance and pointing out interesting geological structures. Meanwhile, I was wobbling all over the place, wanting to crawl over the rocks. My legs went to jelly and my knees ached. This was not a good indication.

Back in Bendigo, I contacted a dear friend whose daughter is a Pilates instructor. Heidi responded that Pilates would be beneficial for me. I began to do my research. Large and mixed-sex classes with the possibility of small children running around would not suit me at all. Then I made contact with Barre Society and had my first meeting with Laura. We instantly connected, and a 10 minutes introductory session turned into a 40 minute chat. I decided then and there that this would be the studio that I wanted to attend. That was back in April. I attend Evolve sessions regularly on Monday and Thursday mornings. I like a structured
routine.

In October, I attended my 50th session. I proudly wore a large silly and bright pink 50 Today badge. In these past 6 months I have very much appreciated the caring support and the professionalism of the instructors and as well as some interesting conversations with other women. My body is steadily responding to the exercises. I know I am getting stronger and fitter. One day I will even be able to hold the Plank posture for the full 45 seconds...but not yet.

Thank you Laura and Nerida for helping and supporting me. They make Pilates such an enjoyable experience. I intend doing Pilates for a very long time....at least to when I can no longer get up those stairs at the front door."

What are you grateful for today?

When you’re first trying out meditation, there’s nothing quite so uninspiring (not to mention daunting!) as sitting on a pillow trying not to think!

Meditation is hard, and doing it alone, in silence, when you don’t really know what you’re supposed to be, like, actually doing…is really hard. (What are you supposed to feel? What’s supposed to happen?)

But getting into the habit of trying is worth it. Even a few weeks of meditating for 10–20 minutes per day can bring benefits like improved sleep and better stress management.

I remember when I first started I just did 5 mins! And that was totally enough until I got the hang of it.

When you start your mind is not used to it. It will fight back and flare up with thoughts and wander and tell you it's bored and you should stop.

These are all normal experiences. Always. The trick is to breath it in when it happens, see it happening, and exhale it out only to reset your focus again. It's not a failure. It's just what happened.

And in time it will happen less and less as your focus and mind becomes more and more accustomed to quiet, peace, and stillness.

More than anything in life, there is no result when you meditate. It is just acceptance. And you.

"Having experienced the benefits of reformer pilates from my own practice, I originally became an instructor to improve my knowledge and technique. Instructing gives me the opportunity to assist others improve their general strength and flexibility. Watching others grow in confidence and enjoy the magic of reformer is extremely rewarding. ⁠

Movement is a way of expressing yourself, a product of mind and body connection. I believe it is in our DNA to move. With endless movement possibilities available to us, pilates/barre provides a wonderful mix of physical and mental challenge. Movement allows me to relieve everyday stressors and clear my mind. ⁠

The thrill of achievement inspires me. There is something exhilarating about setting your sights on a goal, making a plan, and with perseverance achieving the unthinkable. ⁠

Having worked as a speech pathologist for many years my teaching philosophy is simple: clear communication mixed with belief and encouragement makes the impossible possible. Good technique is important and guidance essential to reach your full potential. ⁠

We love having mums and daughters (and little men!) enjoying classes together 🥰

Lauren: "Mum and I joined Barre Society 5 years ago, and it’s become a solid part of our routines throughout some pretty major milestones.

Mat classes helped me feel fantastic in the lead up to my wedding, outdoor classes in Rosalind Park during COVID were a great way to stay connected, reformer classes throughout pregnancy kept the morning sickness at bay, Barre+1 eased me back into exercise following the birth of my babies and now Rise classes give me the flexibility to keep moving throughout the craziness of parenting 2 young kids.

Mum and I really enjoy coming along to classes together (often with my kids Maya & Louie in tow) then heading out for a coffee and catch up afterwards.

I love the way the classes make me feel and it’s the first form of exercise that I genuinely enjoy & look forward to doing!"

Post-pregnancy it's important to be intuitive with your body, and go slow as you ease back into regular movement. Even if you feel totally ready to go! ⁠

Remember, your body has been through a lot, so be kind to it.⁠

Pilates and barre are lovely and easy on the joints and pelvic floor whilst challenging you to develop strength and tone.⁠

During class, we guide you to modify any abdominal exercises so you are engaging your core muscle groups safely.⁠

Whether you're a new mum or a mum of 4, we support you to close any abdominal separation, strengthen essential core muscle groups, wake up your glutes and and re-align posture.⁠

Our next 8-week Barre+1 course starts on Wednesday 7 February at 11.30am.⁠ The course will be a combination of mat and reformer pilates classes.⁠
