From our TVs to toys to our security cameras, we’re becoming dependent on a lot of devices that are constantly connected to the internet.

Make sure you change default settings to set the highest security and make sure those listening devices are unplugged.

“We got rid of Alexa because we figure she’s listening all the time and just don’t trust her,” said Stan Metzger in Greenville.

Sim Swapping is a new sneaky way to get around your two-step authentication for mobile banking. Weisman explains how it works.

“They call your mobile phone carrier, they pretend they are you and they get your phone number shifted to their phone, and so in this way they are not only able to steal your password but have the phone to defeat dual factor authentication. So, this is something we’re just starting to see happening, it’s going to be worse in the upcoming year,” he said.

Soon I Will be Walking again!

Imagine wearing high-tech body armour that makes you super strong and tireless.

Such technology, more specifically called an exoskeleton, sounds like the preserve of the Iron Man series of superhero movies.

Yet the equipment is increasingly being worn in real life around the world. And one manufacturer - California's SuitX - expects it to go mainstream.

"There is no doubt in my mind that these devices will eventually be sold at hardware stores," says SuitX's founder Homayoon Kazerooni. "As the prices come down you'll be able to simply buy them at Bunnings."

In simple terms, an exoskeleton is an external device that supports, covers and protects its user, giving greater levels of strength and endurance.

Sometimes also referred to as "wearable robots", they can be battery-powered and computer-operated, incorporating motors and hydraulics. Or they can be more simple, passive designs that use springs and dampeners.

WhatsApp for iPad is harder than you might think

WhatsApp has grown to become one of the most popular messaging apps in the world, not least because it works the same across Android and iOS devices: no matter what type of smartphone people are using, they all get more or less the same experience inside the WhatsApp interface.

That cross-platform support takes a lot of effort to support though. The app's team is still working on the ability to migrate chats from Android devices to iPhones, and every time a new feature like this gets added, it's a substantial amount of coding and testing work.

The same can be said for getting WhatsApp running on multiple devices separately, without relying on an active connection to your phone. Part of the appeal of WhatsApp is its encryption, and this needs to be carefully handled on each new device.

In other words, putting WhatsApp on the iPad involves more than just making the screen elements and menus bigger for a larger screen. Back in August we saw a leaked image of WhatsApp running on an iPad, so it looks likely that a tablet version is at an advanced stage of development.

According to the ACCC’s Scamwatch, almost 6,500 Australians have reported phone calls from scammers trying to convince them to download software that gives access to home computers and their bank accounts.

Commonly called remote access scams, scammers pretend to be from well-known organisations such as Telstra, eBay, NBN Co, Amazon, banks, government organisations, police, and computer and IT support organisations. They create a sense of urgency to make you give them access to your computer via remote access software.

“Remote access scams are one of the largest growing scam types in Australia. Scammers take advantage of the digital world and the fear of fraud and cybercrime to access people’s devices and steal their money,” ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said.

Scammers are pretending to be from real and well known businesses such as banks, travel agents, insurance providers and telco companies, and using various excuses around COVID-19 to:

ask for your personal and financial information
lure you into opening malicious links or attachments
gain remote access to your computer
seek payment for a fake service or something you did not purchase.

Tips to protect yourself from these types of scams:

Don’t click on hyperlinks in text/social media messages or emails, even if they appear to come from a trusted source.
Never respond to unsolicited messages and calls that ask for personal or financial details — just press delete or hang up.
Never provide a stranger remote access to your computer, even if they claim to be from a telco company such as Telstra or the NBN Co.
To verify the legitimacy of a contact, find them through an independent source such as a phone book, past bill or online search.

The platforms' parent company, Meta (formerly Facebook), announced that it would push back its original plans of enabling E2EE by 2022, according to The Sunday Telegraph. In April, Facebook said E2EE would "protect people's private messages and mean only the sender and recipient, not even us, can access their messages." Now, however, Meta's global head of safety, Antigone Davis, told the Telegraph over the weekend that the company is working with privacy and safety experts and governments to ensE2EE is essential for user privacy since it protects your messages from cybercriminals intercepting them and collecting your data. It also keeps the platform (like Facebook) from accessing the content of your messages and targeting ads to you. ure it gets E2EE

There's a reason shoppers started doing more online shopping after Thanksgiving, but it had nothing to do with sales.

After the Thanksgiving turkey has been carved and Black Friday shoppers have gone home with their discounted loot, people will get online to score some Cyber Monday deals. Last year, Americans spent more than $9 billion online for Cyber Monday, making it the biggest e-commerce sales day in the country. But how did such a “holiday” come to be?

Thank Ellen Davis, senior vice president of research and strategic initiatives for the National Retail Federation, who coined the term in 2005. For several years in a row, the NRF had noticed a recurring spike in online revenue and traffic on the Monday following Thanksgiving. They believed it was because people were making purchases from their computers at work, where the Internet connections were faster and their kids couldn’t get a sneak peek at their gifts. Planning to shop this year?

GoDaddy’s Chief Information Security Officer said the company detected unauthorized access to its systems where it hosts and manages its customers’ WordPress servers. Credentials for about 1.2 million accounts were exposed.

The attacker used a compromised password to gain access to its systems around September 6th, but the breach was only discovered last week.

As details on the breach continue to be made public it's important to remember that the GoDaddy example is not unique. In fact, 81% of data breaches are due to weak password security.

The GoDaddy breach is yet another reminder that companies need to take a proactive approach toward improving employee password security

Though Facebook has discontinued future support for the aging Oculus Go standalone virtual reality headset, it has made a big move that should give it some more use.

The social media giant issued a software update to allow full root access to the Oculus Go headset, with no jailbreaking required, as reported by the official Oculus developer blog. This move has long been rumored, especially since id Software founder John Carmack, the consulting chief technology officer of Oculus VR, said in September that he was in favor of unlocking the device.

After a bit of a rough start, thanks to performance issues, Windows 11 and AMD processors should start behaving around each other now.

Earlier this month, AMD and Microsoft announced plans to fix the slowdown cropping up between some AMD processors and Windows 11. Now, as promised, we have a couple of new patches that should take care of the problem.

A recent update on AMD's initial report of the problem now shows resolutions for both primary causes of these performance drops.

The L3 cache latency issue, which would cause the cache to take up to three times longer to access, is being addressed by a new Windows 11 22000.282 build. And the "preferred core" problem, which mistakenly would hand some tasks off to a slower processor core, is being handled by AMD's 3.10.08.506 driver package.
