It's an absolute honour to be able to train with and support these muay thai legends, tough fights last night but they did everyone proud.
Had a customer came with a starting issue only to find the engine has at some stage been under water and the starter full of water, there is engines out there that went under in the floods I'm thinking this was one of them. Still runs with a bit of bearing noise but the were a tough engine.
If you have a 75 to 115 mercury that has a trim leak down problem there is a replacement valve kit that normally solves the problem.
Did a well looked after cruise craft at bribie Island, there is corrosion control anodes behind the rocker cover that need checking as well as the block anodes, but if they are covered in grease they can't do there job so clean and replace as needed.
Please do not grease fuel filter elements, grease does not dissolve in fuel and when it is done up squeezes into the fuel system and blocks the filter and fuel system, lubricate the rubber seals with 2 stroke oil only and change the filter on annual services or 100hrs, or if it is contaminated.
The boost pump in this 300XS Optimax has had a load of bad fuel go threw it at some stage and because they are at the bottom of the VST they are susceptible to failure due to contamination. Had fun test driving it though forgot how much fun these millennium hulls are.
This L4 150hp verado came in with power issues and an annual service, I found the power issue was a broken rubber boot for the intake manifold sensor, it's a fairly common problem and there is an updated part for replacement, fitted new boot and service, problem fixed.
Been doing a lot of the mercury v6 and V8s lately and finding the gearbox and anodes not being removed and greased on the 100hr service, they don't come from the factory greased so the salt builds up around the studs and makes the box hard to get off, the spline needs to be greased at the same time. Anode bolts need to be greased as well or they will break trying to get them out when the Anode needs replacing.
Love the old school engines, but I am still finding this fuel line in boats , check your fuel line, if it is grey with red mercury writing on it it will be disintegrating and going threw the fuel system.
I enjoyed building an racing these boats ,you can learn a lot from chasing horse power
There is a nice modification that can be done on the mercury 40hp XR lightning that makes them go a whole lot harder, some adjustments and timing well worth the effort.
Something different, some cool old school mercs.
Yamaha and Suzuki use corrosion control anodes that need checking or changing every service.
Took the number one apprentice to the Whitsunday Islands to work on customers boats and give me a helping hand, was much appreciated. There is worse places I've worked.
It pays to check the trilobe pin that holds the tilt ram pin in place as it has a habit of coming loose then falling out, this allows the tilt pin to move out and contact the top of the pump motor or fall out and disable the trim system.
Gearbox rebuilds are another big part of my work,
At Scarborough marina to do a pair of 225 L6 Verados, almost needed a cherry picker to get to the top cylinder.
This was a 150 EFI that a customer had just purchased and was told it had just been serviced, if you buy a second hand boat I would suggest you get a service done just to make sure and give you a service start date for yourself.
Thermostats need to be checked regularly, this was causing overheating issues as well as a damaged water pump impeller
This is a 250XS opti that had a leaking cylinder head o ring , pulled it down and cleaned it all out , rectified the situation and rebuilt it with the necessary parts to bring it back to good as new.
I love rebuilding engines rather than spending a fortune to replace them, this little 115hp opti had a cold running issue that is pretty common but easily resolved when servicing, nothing a set of over size pistons and new bearings and seals couldn't fix, been out and running for quite a while now and going great.
Make sure that you remove your propeller regularly to check for fishing line around the prop shaft and also remove the plastic bush from the mercury props to check for cracks or stress marks, there is a better option for the merc props that will soften the shift and stop prop rattle at low speed.
Did this lovely old V19C , I fitted this engine new quite some time ago and has been sitting not being used for several years, unfortunately this is the end result of not running the engine regularly and what old fuel can do . It took a lot of time to clean it out and replace pumps and inlet needle but got it up and running again with the injectors needing cleaning as well , running like new again.
I've had quite a lot of enquiries lately about putting some more pictures of what I've been working on and what I've been finding, so I'll do my best to keep updating for you all.
Got some singlets and T shirts made , think I make a good model, what do you think š
The 3cyl mercury has a sleeve on the drive shaft under the water pump that is an issue if not checked when servicing the water pump. It is the main seal failure for this gearbox.
This is not what you want your thermostat to look like, boat had been sitting for a while but thought he should have it serviced before he used it again, was a wise move, engine would have overheated for sure. Thermostat and water pump had never been out even though he had paid to get it serviced elsewhere.
Had to lift the power head off the 250XB to get to the shift rod as it was a bit tight in the bush at the top. Found a damaged fuel pump gasket during the service.
Don't see a lot of these , I had one I was ski racing, 3.0L EFI, needed a throttle position sensor to get the right information to the computer, a full service and set up and running as good as new.
L4 verado service and recalibrate foot throttle as it was not getting 100 percent throttle, gained a stack of speed now it is getting full throttle.
