Ever wondered if breast size affects milk supply? Let's set the record straight with some facts! π
π Breast size β Milk Supply: Contrary to popular belief, the size of your breasts doesn't determine how much milk you can produce. Whether you're an A cup or a D cup, your body is capable of producing enough milk to nourish your baby.
π It's All About the Milk-Making Tissues: Milk production is primarily determined by the number of milk-producing glands (alveoli) in your breasts, not their size. These glands exist in all breast sizes and can increase in number during pregnancy and breastfeeding to meet your baby's needs.
π Supply & Demand Rule: The key to maintaining a healthy milk supply is frequent and effective breastfeeding or expressing milk. The more your baby feeds or you empty your breasts, the more signals your body receives to produce milk.
π Breastfeeding Success Isn't Measured by Size: Remember, successful breastfeeding is not about breast size but about ensuring your baby gets the nourishment they need. Support, proper latch, and feeding on demand play a more significant role in breastfeeding success than breast size ever could.
π Myth Busting Alert! π
Ever heard that breastfeeding prevents pregnancy? π€ Let's debunk this common misconception! While it's true that breastfeeding can delay ovulation for some women, it's NOT a foolproof method of contraception. π«πΆ
π©βπ¬ According to recent studies, while breastfeeding can suppress ovulation temporarily, it's not reliable as the sole method of birth control nor is the return of a woman's menstrual cycle. Understanding your body's fertility signals and using additional contraceptive methods are crucial for preventing unplanned pregnancies. Please feel free to inbox me if you have any questions or would like some more information about effective contraceptive methods both pharmaceutical and natural.

Bringing a new life into the world is filled with countless firsts, one of the most heartwarming being the first breastfeed. It's a moment of connection, bonding, and the beginning of a beautiful journey together. However, it's important to remember that, like any first step, the first breastfeed might not always go as smoothly as anticipatedβand that's perfectly normal.
Research shows that breastfeeding is a learned skill, not just for new moms but for babies too! According to a study published in the Pediatrics journal, it's common for newborns to need a bit of time to learn how to latch on and feed effectively. This learning curve is natural, as babies need to coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing, which can take some practice.
The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of patience and support during this time. They suggest that skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth can significantly help with the baby's instinct to breastfeed but also stress that it's okay if it takes a few tries to get it right.
Remember, every baby's journey to successful breastfeeding is unique. Some might latch on immediately, while others may need several attempts across the first few days. It's not a reflection of your ability to care or provide for your baby but simply a part of the learning process for both of you.
So, to all the new parents out there, give yourself and your little one grace and time.
Support is key, whether it's from healthcare providers, lactation consultants, or your support network. You're not alone in this journey.
Let's normalize the learning curve of the first breastfeed. It's not just about nourishment but about building a bond that lasts a lifetime. π
A 2017 systematic review has brought new insights into the weight changes of full-term, breastfed newborns, challenging the long-standing belief that babies should regain their birth weight by days 14-18.
ππThe study reveals a more detailed understanding of newborn weight dynamics. While it's common for babies to lose up to 10% of their birth weight initially, the journey back to their birth weight can vary significantly. ππ
This finding is crucial for parents and healthcare professionals, as it suggests that the current recommendation of weight gain by day 14 may not apply to every baby. It's a reminder that each little one is unique and may follow their own healthy growth trajectory.
Current neonatal birth weight charts in Australia, along with the associated policies and procedures, may be relying on outdated data. This lack of up-to-date, individualized information could inadvertently place undue pressure on new mothers. They might feel compelled to start bottle-feeding, under misconceptions such as not producing enough breast milk for their baby, even when this may not be the case. This situation highlights the need for a more tailored approach to neonatal and maternal care and more support to help mother achieve successful breastfeeding.
πRemember, losing weight initially is not necessarily a sign of insufficient milk or baby feeding problems. Sometimes our babies just need a bit more support to establish breastfeeding properly πΌπ
Be kind to yourselves π
Research shows that breastfeeding, like all other skills our newborns have to develop, is a learnt behaviour. It does not happen automatically for all babies.
If you're facing challenges with breastfeeding, know that you're not alone and there are wonderful, supportive options available.
π€±πΌ Remember, formula isn't your only choice. We're here to let you in on a little secret: you can often get donated breastmilk from generous, fellow moms! This can be a fantastic way to 'top up' your little one until you're both ready for exclusive breastfeeding.
Unfortunately donated breastmilk is not often discussed and a lot of parents are unaware that it's a possibility outside of the hospital system.
β οΈ Safety First: Always ensure that donated milk comes from a reputable source. It's crucial for the health and safety of your baby.
π‘οΈπ©βπ§βπ¦ Motherhood is a journey, and it's okay to seek help and explore different options.
We want to emphasize that formula feeding is a completely valid and nutritious choice for your baby. This message is not about suggesting a 'right' or 'wrong' way to feed your baby, but about providing information on the different options available. Whether itβs breastmilk, donated milk, or formula, the best choice is the one that works for you and your baby.
I've often seen new mums being steered towards formula feeding by a healthcare system that seems to prefer a one-size-fits-all approach, not accounting for individual differences like genetics, birth trauma, or lack of experience. This often results in inadequate support for mothers who could successfully breastfeed with the right guidance and information.
To all the mums out there, remember you're not alone. With appropriate support and knowledge, breastfeeding is often achievable. If you're finding it tough and need a bit of support, feel free to drop me a message and I encourage you to follow my page to stay up to date with the information I'll be providing about breastfeeding over the coming weeks.
Good afternoon wonderful community π
I've been thinking a lot about something that's really important to me, and I want to share it with you. Over the next few weeks, I'm going to focus on talking about breastfeeding.
I've realized that for so many mothers, breastfeeding can be a tough journey. It's one of those things that we're expected to just 'get right,' but the reality is, it's not that simple! It's a journey that can be filled with ups and downs, and sometimes, it feels like you're the only one struggling.
I want to change that. I believe it's crucial to talk more about this, to share our stories, and to support each other. Whether you've had a hard time with breastfeeding or found a way that works for you, your story matters.
So, let's open up this conversation. Let's share, learn, and support each other. No judgments, just real talk. If you've got any tips, stories, or questions, feel free to share. I'm here to listen and chat.
π€± Together let's encourage each other and work to change the expectations on breastfeeding mothers.

This new Queensland-first homebirth service is all about empowering women with more choices in maternity care! πΆ
The Publicly Funded Homebirth service is launching at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital mid-next year. This will allow expectant mothers with low-risk pregnancies the choice to give birth in the comfort of their own home. π‘
Research shows that planned homebirths, attended by skilled midwives, have similar safety outcomes to hospital births. π©ββοΈπ₯ For the safety of the mother and baby, a number of criteria will be considered to determine whether this service is suitable.
The outcomes of the service, including safety and quality, benefits to women, sustainability, consumer interest, and feedback, will guide future planning and investments in other parts of Queensland.
