The Pyramid of Learning is a hierarchical model that demonstrates the foundational role of sensory integration in supporting higher-level learning and functional skills.

Challenges in the foundational levels of sensory integration can hinder the development of higher-level skills. Therefore, interventions aimed at improving sensory integration can have a positive impact on learning and overall functioning.

Photos from KnOT Occupational Therapy's post 22/06/2023

These 8 sensory systems work together to help individuals understand and interact with the environment around them. When there are challenges in any of these systems, it can impact a person's ability to function effectively in daily life. Ayres’ Sensory Integration (ASI) therapy is an approach that can help individuals with sensory processing challenges to improve their ability to process sensory information and better navigate their environment.

These 8 senses help us function and engage in daily tasks. If some senses are underdeveloped then a child may experience difficulty completing tasks that we consider as ‘simple’. As a result, the child will spend a lot of energy and effort trying to ‘catch up’ or compensate. They may often become overwhelmed if the tasks gets too difficult for them.

We may notice our kiddies suddenly becoming frustrated, having meltdowns or throwing tantrums. They may also avoid doing some ‘simple’ tasks altogether by zoning out or ignoring us when asked to complete a task. These are common signs that the child is overwhelmed or are finding the tasks too difficult.

As a paediatric OT, we investigate why the child is becoming overwhelmed. One of the main contributing reasons is how developed their senses are and it’s ability to process effectively. We aim to improve these senses to make daily tasks easier for kiddies and life easier for families. This way the child can focus on reaching their milestones through learning, playing and growing instead of spending effort on ‘catching up’.

05/12/2022

Sensory processing is our brain's ability to effectively register, accurately interpret and appropriately respond to sensory stimuli.

Occasionally, children may have difficulties appropriately registering, processing and/or reacting to the sensory input. This may be misinterpreted as the child having behavioural issues or just 'acting up'.

Learning about a child's sensory system will help us work out how we can best support and develop their systems. As a result, it will improve various areas including regulation, attention, following instructions, etc.

Note: There are 8 sensory systems in total! Keep an eye out for future posts from KnOT that will provide some information on these sensory systems.

One of the most commonly asked questions we hear 💭.

As children are growing they may encounter some trickier periods. Some ‘kid’ tasks that may appear easy to others may be more effortful. Our OT’s are here to help identify the underlying reasons behind behaviours or difficulties and to support families to use their strengths, develop their skills and reach their potentials!

We will delve into this question more over the coming weeks!

23/11/2022

We have been wrapping up the year with end of term OT review assessments and it’s an amazing time where we reflect on the progress and gains our kiddies and families have made over just 9 weeks.

Keep up the amazing work. Take care during this busy period 💛

21/07/2022

This last month has been filled with lots of new and wonderful families and kiddies being seen by KnOT. We’ve been doing lots of parent feedback sessions and it is honestly one of the best parts in our day.

We are always seeing those ‘aha’ moments unfold in these sessions. It's great to see that parents are finally feeling understood, understanding what’s happening and where to go from now. We are providing insight and answers to questions they never got a chance to ask or didn’t know were needed to be asked. Feedback sessions are completed after our comprehensive assessment.

We are very thankful for the wonderful families and support we have been receiving 💕
