June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month!!!

From 1 July 2024, people aged 45 to 49 can request their first bowel cancer screening kit.

Please book a time with your GP to receive the kit or get more information on bowel screening tests.

Contact us via 07 2103 5858 to speak with one of our lovely receptionists🥰

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
With regular screening, most polyps growing in your bowel can be found and removed before they have the chance to turn into cancer. If you’re 45 or older, you should start screening for bowel cancer.
Bowel cancer risk is increased by smoking, eating an excessive amount of red meat (especially when charred), eating processed meats (smoked, cured, salted or preserved), drinking alcohol, and being overweight or obese.
These risks can all be addressed through diet and lifestyle changes.
Age, family history, hereditary conditions and personal health history can also influence bowel cancer risk.

HIV Prevention - All about PrEP

What is PrEP?
PrEP is short for HIV 'Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis’ and it is a medicine that can help prevent HIV .

How does PrEP work?
It works by stopping HIV from taking hold in the body if you are exposed, e.g., if you had s*x without a condom with someone who has HIV.

Who is PrEP recommended for?
PrEP isn’t for everyone. GP can prescribe PrEP to people who are at higher risk of getting HIV, including:
- Gay or bis*xual men
- Sister-girls
- People with an HIV - positive partner
- People who have a lot of casual s*x without using condoms.
- Re**al Gonorrhoea diagnosis in last 6 months
- Re**al Chlamydia diagnosis in the last 6 months
- Methamphetamine use in the last 6 months

PrEP only protects against HIV - NOT other STIs
Get Ready: talk to your GP if you are at one of the higher risks of getting HIV.
Get Set: have a GP’s prescription to buy PrEP from your local chemist.
Get PrEP: take medicine as per GP’s instruction.

Please contact our friendly receptionist to book an initial appointment with our GP.

Why should you get vaccinated before you travel?
Travelling can expose you to these diseases and other diseases that do not occur in Australia:
• COVID-19
• hepatitis A and hepatitis B
• cholera
• chickenpox (varicella)
• typhoid
• yellow fever
• tuberculosis (TB)
• meningococcal disease
• Japanese encephalitis
• measles
• influenza (flu)
• teta**s
• rabies
Pregnant women, babies and young children, the elderly, as well as people with a weakened immune system are at increased risk of infection when travelling and in rare cases these infections can be fatal.
Please visit our GP at least 6 weeks (or preferably 12 weeks) before your trip to discuss the vaccines you might need. Our GP will decide which vaccines you need depending on these factors:
• Your age
• Your vaccination history
• Whether you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
• Any past or present illnesses you may have, and your general health
• The season of travel
• Your destination(s), length of stay or type of travel.
Being vaccinated is far less risky than the risk of getting a disease because you were not vaccinated. In the case of vaccines, side effects are very minor and usually go away within a few days. Common side effects are:
• Fever
• Pain and tenderness at the site of an injection
• Headache, nausea or tiredness
• Muscle or joint pains.
For more information on travel health and vaccination advice, please give us a phone call to book appointment with our GP, 07 2103 5858
