Megan Badger talks STELLAR STEM | Spaceaustralia There are many STEM education programs available to schools, but not many can claim to provide a fully functioning rocket engine to high school students. This multi-faceted program is bringing a new dimension to school and industry partnerships as well as creating enthusiasm for the space industry.
We have exciting news!
I would like to take the time to thank the Australian Space Awards for choosing us as a Finalist for the 2021 Space Education and Outreach Program of the Year.
The Science of Rockets STEM Program is a team run operation and project. Without the amazing support of PFi Aerospace and Products For Industry (PFi) this program would not be where it is today.
New Stellar STEM Program Launched in a Springfield Indigenous School - Springfield Lakes Hymba Yumba Independent School, a Springfield Indigenous school, was the site of the national unveiling of the Stellar STEM Program.
The inaugural Stellar STEM workshop – which involves hands-on experience firing a rocket engine – was held at the Hymba Yumba Independent School, one of a handful of Indigenous schools in Queensland.
It was the first of 14 workshops to be conducted in Queensland public schools in Ipswich, Logan and Brisbane this year by PFi Aerospace, an Australian owned company based at Richlands.
PFi Aerospace General Manager Megan Badger said the aim of the workshops was to be a launchpad for more female students to become involved in STEM.
“It’s important these workshops are offered to improve the learning and wellbeing outcomes for all students, whatever their background and the challenges they might be facing outside of school,” Ms Badger said.
“Studies show fewer students, particularly females, are taking up STEM. We need to reverse this trend because the children who are getting involved in STEM could potentially be the innovators who take the world to the next level of technological advancement.
“We want to build students’ confidence and interest, by showing them they don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand rockets.”

It is rocket science: Launching girls into the STEM career space Stellar STEM workshops — involving hands-on experience with rockets — are being run in south-east Queensland schools, with a national rollout expected next year.
It was a fantastic day and a great launch for Stellar STEM. I'm proud to be working alongside talented and inspiring women, Dr Kaye Spark and Harriet Angus. We hope this program fires up female students to pursue a future in STEM and the space industry.
PFi Aerospace are proud to support these Stellar Stars in STEM.

Rockets launch school girls’ interest in engineering THOUGH she hadn’t thought of it before, Sienna Fuller-Chapman thinks she might like to work as an engineer when she grows up.
PFi Aerospace is proud to be the recipient of The Maker Projects: Community STEM Engagement grant 2020. The Maker Projects: Community STEM Engagement grants aim to foster creativity and inquiry‑based learning and support the development of skills in students and youth under 18 years of age in design, engineering and programming, through hands-on learning.
Stellar STEM is a series of interactive workshops held at low socio-economic schools in Brisbane, Ipswich, and Logan. The aim is to inspire and engage female students to participate in STEM activities and careers. It is presented by a panel of women in STEM and is divided into three parts: a question and answer panel, three specialist hands-on workshops running on a cycle for smaller groups of students, and the firing of a hybrid rocket motor on the school oval.
Our workshops will be run by Mechanical Engineer, Harriet Angus, Scientist Dr Kaye Spark, and Megan Badger. The program Launches on Monday the 19th April.
Last Thursday, Bowen State High was visited by PFI Aerospace. Bowen State High School has partnered with PFI Aerospace to bring their Science of Rockets course to BSHS. This is incredibly exciting and unique opportunity for our students. This course involves the use of a hybrid rocket engine known as HAILI. We are very excited to deliver this course in our learning Academy Program and can’t wait to see HAILI in action. Our sincerest thanks go to Abbott Point Operations for their continued support of our school which has enabled us to deliver such fantastic programs to our students. If you would like to see the HAILI ignited then please come along to our Kick Start afternoon for a demonstration!
