The recent attack by Hamas militants on Israeli civilians was abhorrent and unjustified and does not help reach their goal of Palestinian statehood. I do believe some sort of action by Israel is required – namely, to extricate the Israeli hostages. I see many people and governments, including Australia, taking this opportunity to stand in solidarity with Israel. It would be remiss of us to ignore how decades of illegal Israeli occupation has contributed to the problem. I know I will make a number of people on each side unhappy saying this, but I can already see how this will play out: Israel will seek revenge as its people call for blood. Israel’s military is far superior and backed by the USA, and the Gaza strip is one of the most densely packed places on earth, meaning Israeli airstrikes will kill far more innocent Palestinian civilians than the Israeli civilians Hamas has recently killed. Palestinians will lose more land and will mourn their dead, and the cycle of revenge and radicalization will continue. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. That is why we should not declare blanket unreserved support for any side. This will get a lot worse before it gets better.
Happy international zouk day! 🌎 💃🏻

Check out my recent radio segment with the 4EB Vietnamese Youth Program, where I discuss the positive and negative effects of social media on young people. Social media is not going away any time soon, so to engage with young people on the subject, we need to acknowledge why people use these various platforms, their relative pitalls, the, motivations of tech companies, and ways we can minimise the harms

I’ve just seen "Everything Everywhere All At Once" – it’s a great film, and I highly recommend it. It is a lot to process, so below is my best attempt to condense my thoughts on this movie:
Evelyn represents our proclivity to take our loved ones for granted, to mistake kindness for weakness, to pass on our trauma, to take on so much until we fragment and become confused. Her daughter Joy fails in her bid for acceptance as a q***r young person trying to bridge an intergenerational and cross-cultural divide. Feeling the sting of rejection, she sees herself as insignificant in the universe and falls prey to the grip of nihilism. She embodies the postmodernist problem – there are so many interpretations of the universe, that everything becomes everything at once, one gets paralysed with indecision, and nothing matters anymore. She appears depressed, and she is drawn to suicidal ideation as she yearns for the relief of total oblivion. Nihilism is intellectually appealing but ultimately destructive and fighting it with all our strength represents the existential burden that we face as humans. The solution is not to destroy ourselves, or to magnify our own ego (as it will never be enough), but to recognise how we are integral pieces to something bigger than ourselves, and how much we matter to those around us.
This film draws attention to the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. Although I didn’t notice any specific psychedelic use in this film, given the vast amount of hallucinatory content crammed into 2 hours 19 minutes, it’s hard to not see the influence from psychedelic inspired work. It is easy to write this film off as absurdist. A lot of it doesn’t make sense. However, that is an inevitable part of the psychedelic therapeutic process. In our day to day lives, we repeat patterns and become hardwired in unhelpful cognitions which cause us distress. Sometimes we need to be inundated with a myriad of new perspectives, that we work through and distil. It is through this process that we find meaning and recover from our traumas. Now before people contemplate reporting me to AHPRA – I am NOT encouraging people to go out and do some mushrooms in a forest, unsupervised. Psychedelic use can be terrifying and dangerous. It can bring us face to face with the monsters of our past. It’s not an easy fix. It actually takes a lot of work on part of the participant. Psychedelic assisted psychotherapies have shown enormous promise in trials, with effect sizes greater than standard antidepressants, however, these are performed in strictly controlled settings. I can only advocate for their use with the guidance of a qualified health professional to ensure safety during use and debriefing afterwards, and we can lobby governments to consider legalisation in jurisdictions where it is not legal yet outside of clinical trials.
We cannot ignore the role the Asian American experience plays in this body of work. I don’t think this film would have had the support of Hollywood 20 years ago. Asian Americans have often been type casted as quiet, unassuming, conservative and softly spoken. They had to work their way up from support act, to main lead, to director, and now in 2022, a bold artistic statement like this has shown Western audiences that Asian characters are not just plot devices, but have rich inner lives and stories worth telling.
