Back in early December, we had the absolute privilege of recording a 5-song LP for You Can Make Some Noise project! 🎊
This work was the culmination of 6 weeks of songwriting workshops held at the RBWH You Can Centre. With an amazing team of participants, tutors, engineers and the whole Stairwell team, this stunning new work was brought to life in the studio.
We'd also like to extend a big thanks to Dan, Ben and QUT for their generous support of the project!
Stay tuned for 2024, with more exciting YCMSN updates to come… 👀
Next from Topology’s highlights of 2023:
Let’s hear from Jade Montgomery - Topology’s Creative Academy Officer! 📚🎶
They reflect on their experience at Normanby Station back in March. Read about it below ↓
“In March this year, I was privileged to visit the Harrigan brothers Vince, Dylan, Pando, and Cliff of Black Image Band in Cooktown and Normanby Station as an artist for Topology. Normanby Station is located an hour's drive from Cooktown and is the homeland of the Balngarrawarra people. The Harrigan brothers are the Traditional Owners of the land and the rangers of Normanby Station.
We spent most of our time with the brothers jamming and yarning, sharing music and laughter as we got to know them and learned about the history of the land, the station, and their people. Particularly among the many special experiences from the trip was the day we spent visiting the station itself. Being deep into the wet season, our only way to the station was in a dingy across the croc-filled Normanby river (although I didn’t see any) before a short drive to the homestead. We ate, jammed, and yarned as the brothers toured us through the beautiful country and shared many stories along the way.
Being on country with the Harrigan Brothers was a deeply profound experience and I'm very grateful for the time and knowledge they shared with me. I can’t wait to see the Creative Bootcamp planned for 2024 to come to life and see the many beautiful stories and experiences that will come through it.”
- JADE MONTGOMERY

We’d like to highlight a very special person that has been involved with Topology in the past year - his name is Joe Fan. 🎻
We met Joe through the You Can Make Some Noise songwriting workshops at the You Can Centre at the RBWH. Amidst Leukaemia treatment, Joe generously offered his musical talents, lending a distinctive touch to the creation of original music during our weekly sessions. His contributions to this project are immeasurable.
Over the three years that Joe has been fighting cancer, he extended his passion for music to The Stairwell Project, serenading patients and staff with his violin in unconventional performance spaces within the hospital, spreading joy to all who listened.
In late October, Joe was told that treatment options for his specific strain of the disease had been exhausted.
His biggest wish for the time he has left is to travel. Any amount will help to fulfil this dream, with the money raised contributing to fulfilling this aspiration, covering expenses such as flights, accommodation, and specialised travel insurance.
Please consider supporting Joe through GoFundMe below:

We’re thrilled to witness the stellar achievements of our Launchpad alumni and today we’d like to spotlight the incredible Abigail Lui 🎻
Abigail has been honoured with the prestigious 2024 ABC Composer Commissioning Fund grant - one of ten awarded throughout Australia. This initiative aims to support emerging artists and foster diversity within new Australian music!
Abigail's creative talent was showcased earlier in October during our Queensland Stories Brisbane performance, where one of her compositions made its debut.
We are extremely proud of Abigail’s achievements and we can’t wait to see what she does next! 🎶

Check our Topology’s very last school workshops of the year - making music with the wonderful students of Julia Creek State School! 🌟
Navigating through some challenging conditions, including extreme heat and slippery roads, our dedicated musicians embarked on a regional workshop series spanning across Longreach, Richmond, Julia Creek, and Isisford.
Led by John Babbage, Nick Keogh-Peel and Lucas Montgomery, these young minds engaged in a transformative two-day experience, crafting original compositions and learning how to play musical instruments. We were simply blown away by their creativity!
From the Top Up team, we’d like to thank everybody involved in making this year a success.
Connecting with students and communities along this journey has been a pleasure, and we’re thrilled to be returning in the New Year to continue fostering music, expression, and creativity.
Stay tuned for more inspiring collaborations and musical exploration 🎶✨
As 2023 draws to a close, we asked the Topology team about some of their personal highlights from this year (it’s been a big one!) and we’re thrilled to share them with you! 💫
Starting off first with Annabel Cleeve - one of Topology’s brilliant Regional Project Officers. They reflect on their time spent at Texas Has Talent Creative Bootcamp 2023:
“I never tire of observing the reluctant shyness of participants on arrival, and the complete transformation they undergo during the creative process. Their initial unsureness is replaced by confidence, enthusiasm, self belief, joy and an appetite for more.
Providing an opportunity to perform further enhances the transformative effects, establishes community connections and creates a positive experience that sculpts memories for the future. The audience is also altered by being swept up in the infectious joy of the performances. The resulting anecdotes have the power to heal all manner of community challenges.”
- ANNABEL CLEEVE
