We use PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol), a biodegradable and safe plastic (no microplastics), in 3 of our products for its excellent film and binding properties.
While we're not thrilled to use an ingredient that’s technically a plastic, we have assessed decades of scientific literature that supports its widespread use and safety.
Alternatives to PVA are not readily available, and frankly, not hugely needed either.
While it would be nice to claim that all 7 of our products are “plastic-free”, for now, we’ll happily settle with our fabulous 4.
For more details, visit our blog through the link below where we get into the facts about PVA.
Stay safe out there Skippers.

Let’s skip the background and get straight into it. Is PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) unsafe?
It's water-soluble, biodegradable, and safe for human exposure. Millions consume it daily in supplement capsules. It's also found in food packaging, paints, textiles, and more.
For this reason, there are numerous scientific studies over decades which assess and confirm the safety of PVA, even when ingested by humans.
While we're not encouraging you to eat our products, we aim to debunk disinformation about PVA and its impact on us and the planet.
We cover more and the reasons behind the disinformation in our blog below.

So, laundry sheets contain plastic hey? Let’s continue the conversation on PVA / PVOH (Polyvinyl alcohol), an ingredient used in our sheets, dish tabs and toilet blocks.
PVA as an ingredient has been used for nearly a century, in many industries and across many products/applications. From contraceptives, to supplement capsules, and cleaning products as a film & binding agent (yep, that’s us).
The ingredient can be adapted with various structures to alter its properties, and the structures used in cleaning products such as our sheets are engineered to be highly water soluble and biodegradable with lower molecular weights.
There are decades of scientific journals and research supporting its safety and biodegradability, addressing concerns of bioaccumulation and microplastics.
We discuss why companies are claiming PVA in cleaning products to be unsafe and causing microplastics in our blog. Long story short? The one scientific study that makes these claims is funded by a US private company that has a commercial interest in discrediting cleaning products with PVA, and others with the same commercial interests are jumping in.
Scientists at the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) have rejected these claims, as the study explores structures of PVA not used in cleaning products (higher molecular weights), and they failed to acknowledge the decades of research to the contrary in making their claims.

At Skipper, we love a good debate. A few companies have made claims that "laundry sheets are plastic" and "laundry sheets break down into microplastics".
Are they plastic? In part, yes. They contain plastic. But there's more to the story.
This is a unique type of “plastic” that is completely biodegradable, used in many household products (including nearly every dishwasher tablet), and ingested orally by millions of people, every day.
This plastic is called Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA or PVOH), a water-soluble synthetic polymer that we use in our laundry sheets, dishwasher tablets and toilet blocks.
Despite decades of research confirming the safety of PVA to humans and the environment, the ingredient has been subject to debate based on misinformation spread by companies who have a commercial interest in discrediting products containing PVA (specifically, laundry sheets and pods).
We dive into the facts and the reasons behind the misinformation in our latest blog.
We encourage everyone to take 5 minutes to read the blog and get informed.

Our produce bags are the Swiss Army knives of kitchen essentials; they do plenty more than just hold your veggies.
Use them to store and organise cords and cables, dry fresh herbs, or use them as a lunch snack bag, knot them into a pet toy or use them as a pan scrubber.
Who said produce bags can't have a side hustle?
Tell us what you use your mesh bags for - the most bizarre answer gets a special treat 👀
Skip the plastic, and the razor cuts. Body wash that doubles as a shaving foam is multitasking at its finest. These pins belong to our warehouse team member Mel, who loves the body wash for her shaving days, but also gets it for free so she really can’t be trusted.
So our wrappers are compostable... but what if you don't have access to a composting system?
No need to sweat, Skipper. Dispose of our wrappers in your general waste. Yes, while this is not perfect, this does still end up in landfill, but the beauty of these wrappers means they will decompose quicker than other material, no matter where they are.
Don’t be tempted to put your wrappers in the recycling bin! This is what we like to call “wish-cycling”. Wish-cycling is the disposal of consumer waste in a recycling bin in hopes of it being recycled when it cannot or is unlikely to be recycled. If you throw them in your recycling bin, they may get confused for LDPE plastic and contaminate the recycled plastics. With only 6.2% of LDPE getting recycled, we cannot afford to reduce the likelihood of recycling through further contamination.
Got a compost Q? Ask our team in the comments below.
What's in our face wash you ask?
Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide (vitamin B3), jojoba oil and aloe vera are just some of the hero ingredients featured in our face wash that are proven to support sensitive skin through conditioning, moisturising and hydrating.
Kakadu plum smells delightful, but also works alongside Alpha Tocopherol (vitamin E) as skin antioxidants to prevent cell and tissue damage, whilst brightening the skin.
Salicylic acid is our star of the show, helping to remove dead skin cells, minimise pores, reduce acne and exfoliate your skin with every clean.
Yep, all of your favourite fancy skin care ingredients, without the price tag.
