Introducing... Dr Emu!
๐โจ I am excited to announce that I have been awarded my doctorate! โจ๐
Appropriately, I received this notice this afternoon while we were walking around our (nearby nature) lake.
This journey has been long and challenging, filled with many obstacles and even some interference. There is much to be said about Assessor #1 and the two times they rejected my thesis, but today is a day of celebration and gratitude.
I couldn't have reached this milestone without the unwavering support and guidance of my incredible supervisors: Professor Jenny Boddy, Professor Paul Harris, and Dr. Maddy Slattery. Your expertise and encouragement kept me going, even when the path seemed impossible.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Will Dobud and Dr. Eric Brymer, for your wisdom and mentorship throughout this journey. Your insights were invaluable.
My thesis, titled "The Healing Potential of Adventure For Young People Impacted By Systemic Adversity: A Complex Trauma Informed Adventure Therapy Theory," is a testament to the power of dignity and kindness during outdoor adventure.
I interviewed 30 experts, including young people, who all contributed to the result. My family has patiently waited, and their encouragement has been essential.
Here's to making a difference in the lives of young people facing systemic adversity, and to guiding practitioners who seek effective practice.
Thank you all for your support! ๐๐
Sincerely
Dr Emu

How do you provide Article 26 of the Rights of the Child?
While aimed at governments, the article aims to ensure children are provided for in a way that enables some choice in services and goods provided for them
That is my best interpretation for an organisation or practitioner
As a residential care worker we provided pocket money weekly, and that is how this Article is interpreted in child-friendly documents

Complex trauma-informed and human rights checklists.
The QR code is to a Google doc I provided to those who attended my workshop this week in Latvia. Or go straight to the Google sheets checklists: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/108RnAVbcaLEGVpOGALuw2o9TnRlSIXInlFadyqkzJMg/edit?usp=sharing
The checklists come from my thesis findings cross-checked against the Blue Knot Foundation (2012) practice guidelines.
The human rights checklist is a combination of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, The Rights of People with Disabilities, and the Rights of the Child.
Choose either and tick off what you are certain you provide/do in your work. Participants found sometimes surprising things that they might tweak to improve their practice/program/school.
No data is being collected with this free doc. Download it and do what you want. Please acknowledge myself and The EMU Files if you use them publicly.
Could the human rights checklist be a participant's Bill of Rights?
Keen to hear thoughts and suggestions.

The dissociative mechanism of change in wilderness and adventure therapy; Psychological harm and possible malpractice
By exploring probable harm we can be aware and avoid harming the very people we seek to help. This paper got interest at the International Society For The Study Of Trauma And Dissociation annual conference as a poster.
I was surprised that many of the therapists I spoke with were quite aware of the problem identified in this paper (in wilderness therapy), yet most adventure therapy practitioners are not.
This might not be surprising, given that some of our text books encourage practices that cause these likely harms.
A great team with wide ranging expertise put this paper together. It is available as a pre-print: https://doi.org/10.31235/osf.io/qta5p
Keen to hear peoples thoughts.
The dissociative mechanism of change in wilderness and adventure therapy; Psychological harm and possible malpractice Wilderness and adventure therapy (WT, AT) have employed cognitive or adaptive dissonance and involuntary treatment for decades. Cognitive dissonance occurs when people are faced with situations that do not confirm their expectations. Past WT participants have protested that involuntary, inescapable....

Nature-based allied health: current practice, challenges and opportunities
Results
Allied health professionals indicated that exposure to nature could prevent and/or manage a range of physical and mental health, social and developmental outcomes.
Perceived challenges were identified, related to the patients/clients, AHPs themselves, and external factors.
Recommended solutions included increasing education for AHPs and the general public, advancing more research, implementing changes to governance, and legitimisation of nature-based approaches as part of allied health practice.
Nature-based allied health: current practice, challenges and opportunities Purpose To guide the effective use of nature-based approaches, we aimed to determine current practice, challenges and proposed solutions concerning the use of these approaches by allied health professionals (AHPs). We also investigated the signs, symptoms and conditions AHPs believe nature-based app...

Complex trauma & adventuring with kindness
Just completed a 90 minute webinar with a group of mostly therapists through the International Society For The Study Of Trauma And Dissociation
Like virtually all adventure therapy practitioners I have met they are dedicated, kind and passionate in their care of the people they help. Such a cool bunch to hang out with. And they are interested in working outdoors and with adventurous activity.
If you are in training or early career and interested in developing your practice in the CT/ dissociation space, these are the people who will welcome you and give you everything you need to do the work.
My experience at this year's ISSTD conference was that they are as humble, curious and friendly as any AT group I have spent time with. I am fortunate to have a foot in both fields. There is plenty of room for more to join me on this bridge.
Trauma-informed practice and coercive practice are opposites
"trauma-informed approaches were developed as an alternative to coercive medical models" (Carello et al., 2019, p. 3)

Traumatic Experience, Human Rights Violations, and Their Intersection The constructs of trauma theory and human rights have emerged in different disciplines over several decades as frameworks to document and address human suffering. Although traumatic events and human rights violations often occur together, an understanding of how...
