In the whirlwind of our lives, taking a moment to rest seems counterintuitive. Yet, the real challenge lies in our ability to be truly present. Amidst the pings and buzzes of our devices, it's all too common to lose sight of the 'now'—the pivotal moment that genuinely counts.

Stop for a second and think: The past is untouchable, and the future is uncertain. It's the current moment where life unfolds. What unexpected encounters await you? What revelations will today bring?

Being present means genuinely showing up for others, giving them our full attention. This simple act cements the foundations of what could turn into dreams accomplished, for mastery is not achieved through half-hearted attempts. Distraction erodes our aspirations gently, yet steadily. Therefore, strive to create and not just consume on platforms of constant updates.

Maintain your social media engagement efficiently. A short, 20-minute daily check-in to stay connected with your nearest and dearest could suffice.

A recent study from the University of Queensland found Aussie teens are only getting 6-7 hours of sleep per night – far less than the suggested 8-10 hours. This means they are living in a haze that negatively impacts their mood as well as their ability to think, react and regulate their emotions.

If they want to do well, teens need to sleep. Unfortunately, the distraction of devices and the ‘boasting rights’ of staying up late is seeing them miss out on this crucial part of their day.

To help you explain the importance of sleeping well to your teenager. I’ve created three simple infographics. The first is below and it explains the steps to fall asleep without stress. You can use this as a conversation-starter, to guide your teenager towards a better state of well-being.

7 Books Every Year 12 Student Should Read 26/04/2022

Teens often get very down on themselves and frustrated that they’re not reaching the same levels as their peers.

I see this a lot. By year 12, they have put themselves in the “I can’t do that” box. What they don’t realise is that they have the power to get out of it.

We’re all different, and some of us find things like focusing, committing and having a growth mindset more difficult than others. But there is always the potential for positive change.

Change is triggered by learning and developing self-awareness. I am on a continual journey to learn and understand why I do the things I do. As part of this, I do a lot of reading. While some of the books I come across aren’t suitable for a teen audience, many are.

I believe that a simple concept can change a young life. And even if it doesn’t trigger a complete transformation, it can provide some much-needed perspective and help reframe negative thoughts.
