2017 Festival of Tibet - Brisbane Powerhouse

2017 FESTIVAL OF TIBET
WED 26–SUN 30 APRIL, 2017

Brisbane’s ninth annual Festival of Tibet is a celebration of the resilience and optimism of a people and culture under threat.

Founded on the principles of compassion and non-violence, this all-ages festival explores these universal themes through concerts, exhibitions, discussion and workshops.

For hundreds of years Tibet was an almost mythical land, a Shangri-la which for most existed only in the imagination. Invasion and ongoing occupation have brought Tibet into stark reality and revealed both its treasures and challenges for the world to see. The Festival of Tibet offers audiences the chance to experience the traditions and contemporary expressions of a culture determined to thrive despite the odds.

Not only does the Festival offer audiences varied and engaging experiences through its mix of free and ticketed events, it raises much needed funds for the Tibetan refugee community with all proceeds going to the Tibetan Children’s Village schools in India.

Witness the creation of a superb Sand Mandala from millions of grains of coloured sand, learn to cook Tibetan dumplings, paint, meditate, contemplate and be swept up in beautiful music – the Festival of Tibet offers something for everyone.

The Long Road Bar & Eatery, New Farm restaurant review

Brisbane restaurants: Review of European restaurant The Long Road Bar & Eatery in New Farm

couriermail.com.au There’s an undeniable charm about The Long Road Bar & Eatery. Housed in a cute, old Queenslander (formerly home to Gaslight Bistro), the breezy front veranda, with its timber stools and soft couches, proves more alluring to drinkers than a pail of free lollies to a five-year-old.

BRISBANE COMMUNITY OUTRAGE!

Bizare anti-Australia Day Brisbane Councillor Jonathan Sri, Councillor for The Gabba takes a swipe at The Fox Hotel and Colonial Brewing Co Margaret River over innocent Australia Day promotion.

With over 600 comments as of 2pm Tuesday 17 January, the Councillors anti-Australian opinion post that has questioned whether Australia needs an Australia Day, has outraged Aussie's as everyone gears up to enjoy the official National Day of Australia next Thursday.

As commentary telling the local Councillor where to go spiralled out of control, the panicked Councillor lashed out uttering profanity at his local constituents telling them to "calm the f down".

Outraged, the Brisbane community are calling the Councillor's anti-Australian behaviour offensive leaving many wondering if he is in breach of the Brisbane City Council's Code of Conduct and fit for Council.

As things heat up in Brisbane many will be flocking to New Farm Park and South Bank, Brisbane to celebrate Australia Day January 26 as we come together as a nation to celebrate what's great about Australia and being Australian.

In case anyone's interested, I just rang the Fox Hotel down on Melbourne Street to let them know I thought their banner could be a little insensitive to some people and that they perhaps might want to reconsider their messaging in future.

If you're wondering what I'm on about, basically there are a lot of people (myself included) who have concerns about how we currently celebrate Australia Day, and in particular that it implicitly supports and legitimises the ongoing colonisation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The name 'Colonial Brewing Co.' could be seen as particularly provocative, in that it appears to romanticise or celebrate colonialism/colonisation. I doubt that was the intention of the Fox Hotel management, but there are a lot of people in our community for whom the subtext of this kind of advertising is quite negative/offensive. Words like 'colonisation' can (and perhaps should) be understood as having the same gravity as words like 'holocaust'. Putting the words 'Colonial Brewing Co.' on an Australia Day banner is perhaps not the most tactful way to send a positive message about an inclusive Australia.

I'm certainly not suggesting that this is a black and white issue and that we should be pulling out the pitchforks for every ad that mentions Australia Day, but I'd like to see more respectful, thoughtful conversations about these kinds of ads, what underlying messages and values they're reinforcing, whether we think they're appropriate etc.

I think there are legitimate questions to be asked about the kind of nationalism/jingoism which is celebrated on Australia Day and what kind of national identity this is reinforcing. Do we even NEED an Australia Day, or does this form of patriotism simply reinforce arbitrary divisions between fellow human beings?

Is the message 'Every Day is Australia Day' actually a positive one in that it invites us to focus less on January 26 as a specific date for jingoistic celebrations, and instead think about how every single day is a chance to build a kinder, fairer society?
