Empowering education: fundraising for Teacher Aides at Mayfair 2023

For those who may need that extra little nudge to bring some friends along with you on June 18, now you have it! Not only is Mayfair about the fun of the day, but even more important is the fundraising behind it.

Teacher Aides are a prized possession at any school but unlike others, Bardon State School prides itself on having more than most.

From helping with class preparation, numeracy and literacy support, being hands on during learning play, or providing that much-needed hug when emotions are high, teacher aides fill a range of roles in the classroom.

Principal Jill Rutland says it’s important that their use differs to suit individual class needs.

“The teacher remains ultimately responsible for that class, but having an extra trained and skilled adult in the room who knows those children well, means that the teacher can directly and indirectly support those children,” says Mrs Rutland.

“So that could look like the teacher working with children who need extra support, while the teacher aide monitors and supports the rest of the class, and the teacher is freed up and everyone's needs are met.”

And there's a huge sense of pride and job satisfaction for teacher aides like Karen Nugent, who says helping the preppies settle into their school journey continues to be a career highlight.

“You can see them come in and not being able to read or write but by the end of the year, they’re writing the most fabulous creative, imaginative stories,” says Mrs Nugent.

“And with their own writing. It's not our scribbling for them anymore.

“It’s a joy to see that development in their first year of learning which is so crucial for how they carry on through the rest of their school lines.”

There’s no denying the value gained with some additional help but securing funding for those positions can often be a fine art in balancing the school budget.

This is where the school community and Mayfair really shine as the school’s premier event, with funds raised from the day going towards keeping teacher-aides.

“We think it's really important, so we're very grateful for the P&C contribution that allows that to happen,” says Principal Jill Rutland.

“We also allocate school budget because we think it's really important.

“Not all schools are prioritised that way or are as fortunate as we are to be able to spend the money in that way.”
