Tonight on Heyday, we can get together with Iva Davies, to revisit his Flowers and early ICEHOUSE days in the lead up to their Brisbane concert, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of 'Great Southern Land'. Iva reminisces about gigs at Cloudland, and the special place 4ZZZ has in his early career. We're going to keep the playlist firmly planted in one of the best years for alternative music, 1982.
It's a show not to miss, so tune your dials to 4ZZZ on 102.1fm or stream at 4zzz.org.au. 😎

Billy Bragg coming back to play three shows at The Tivoli in Brisbane on the last three days of March, 2023 - each show featuring a very different set.

40 years ago today I carried my trusty Arbiter guitar and Roland Cube 60 amp into the demo studio at the offices of Chappell Music near Marble Arch in London and over three intense days recorded my debut album Life's A Riot with Spy vs Spy.

Gearing up for some 40th anniversary fun and games over the next 12 months, so stay tuned for details.

“Blindog” Donny Bourke was a local legend in Brisbane during the 80’s and 90’s and through till now. Definitely a bluesman/ Rockabilly man in his own way. Definitely with a bar room swagger of ye olde times. Definitely a stayer. Definitely a one of a kind.

After a long health struggle, Donny finally “moved on” on Christmas Day 2022. Typical ol’ school showman style to leave us on such a day. I picture rockabilly reindeers , Santa Elvis’s, and Vixen’s with Beehive hairdos serenading him on his journey to wherever it is that we all go. Probably to a huge party where he is the feature act.

Donny helped our band out so much in the the early days- and so many others bands as well. He was a booking agent at the Orient Hotel. The coolest spot in town for a long while. I will never forget that last minute call from him on the landline at my parents place in Indooroopilly …. “what are “the finga” up to tonite? we’ve had a cancellation. Can you make it in here in an hour?”…. We’d always play the show. He was the first person to ever call us “the finga”.

A wild man with a big heart. A damn fine guitar player. A funny bu**er.

I first encountered Donny as an underage 15 yo in the mid 80’s at OPSHOP at Macs 409 in George Street Brisbane. Way before powderfinger times. I vividly remember walking into the room and him playing “Vicious” and being mesmerised. He was definitely someone to look up to as a player and performer. Rockabilly sensibilities, but well and truly aware and ahead of the curve of “alternative music” vibes, and a purveyor of his own individual style.

For all of the years he was a fixture at various venues around West End throughout the 90s and “naughties” …. it was always a treat to. see him and to catch up for a beer. I wish I had been to so many more of those shows which he always managed to “bring” the vibes. Its sad to know that he wont be rocking effortlessly in the conner of a tiled front bar for ever,

We would all like to share all our condolences to all Donny’s friends and family for their loss.

I know Donnys body had failed him in the later years, but whenever i saw him recently, he always greeted me with a big smile and a hug.

You’ll be missed Donny.

Play Lou your version of “vicious” when you get there. I know he’ll love it.

For now…. Seeya later. Rock On. Roll On.

Ian. (from "The Finga")

Little tribute to corner to Basmati of The Yard 4ZZZfm Brisbane Australia - Meanjin's radio destination for Jamaican, global and local reggae music for 20 years!

After years travelling the globe Basmati began his involvement with 4ZZZ in the year 2002 upon his return to Brisbane. His passion for reggae music grew from living in countries where it was the mainstream and he teamed up with 4ZZZ to put on the first Dub Day Afternoon in the same year. The event surprised everyone even himself with over 300 people showing up. He ran the event as a fundraiser for 4ZZZ til 2012, attracting crowds of 750+, raising tens of thousands of $$$ for Zed and taking reggae music and reggae music culture to the next level in Brisbane

The year after in 2003 Basmati completed his 4ZZZ announcer training and began presenting The Yard, 4ZZZ’s reggae music show. From these beginnings on The Yard Basmati’s drive and passion for reggae music was to become a major force in its popularity and success. The Yard was regularly in the Top Ten of shows subscribed to shows during its annual Radiothon and quickly developed into one of 4ZZZ’s flagship shows. The quality of The Yard has been recognised by his peers in community radio being a 4 time finalist in the CBAA Awards – Best Radio Program Music 2021, Excellence In Music Presenting 2020, Excellence In Music Presenting 2019 and Excellence In Music Presenting 2018. Basmati and The Yard retired at the end of 2021.

Thanks for your 20 years of bringing rhythms to 4ZZZ and the world, Basmati!

A STATEMENT BY AMOS AND EBAN ROACH ON BEHALF OF THE ROACH FAMILY

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Gunditjmara (Kirrae Whurrong/Djab Wurrung), Bundjalung Senior Elder, songman and storyteller Archie Roach.

Archie passed, surrounded by his family and loved ones, at Warrnambool Base Hospital after a long illness. We thank all the staff who have cared for Archie over the past month.

Archie wanted all of his many fans to know how much he loves you for supporting him along the way.

We are so proud of everything our dad achieved in his remarkable life. He was a healer and unifying force. His music brought people together.

A private ceremony will follow.

We ask that the media please respect the family’s privacy.

Archie’s sons, Amos and Eban Roach, have given permission for Archie’s name, image and music to be used, so that his legacy will continue to inspire.

“Well, we were raided by the police in the ‘Great Valentine’s Day Raid’ in 1989.

“So they came in and bought a Dead Kennedys cassette, and it was actually at lunch time and they bought it from me. The detective, he said, ‘Having a party’ I said, ‘It’s not party music, it’s kind of like social commentary.’ And he said, ‘Oh I’ll get it anyway’ and the next thing is they came in and raided the shop and anything that had a sticker on it that said ‘explicit’.

“There was a song on one album that was called ‘Too Drunk to [F**k]’ and we had to defend that word in court. The police, their heart wasn’t in it - they told me later on. Their political masters had basically said, ‘You must go ahead and do this.’

“So my good friend Shane next door, who’s a QC, he spoke beautifully in the case, and what we did was prove that that word was no longer offensive. I had to trundle along to see the Academy Award winning movie, Rain Main, and counted 17 F-words in it. We had Des Partridge, from the Courier Mail, who gave evidence about that. We had Laurie Muller, from the Queensland University Press, come along and say the word was in a book for 12-year-olds, which was the book of the year: ‘Dad dropped something on his toe and said F.’

“Shane’s argument was: ‘Well, if you’re gonna rule against Mr. Vere, you’ll have to rule against Hoyts, who are showing Rain Man…’

“It was a great victory.”
