Our Story
The Gerns family have been making hams since 1895 and has the honour of being the oldest producer of hams and smallgoods in Australia. The Gerns family has always utilised the traditional methods of production for its extensive range of products, coupled with modern and innovative techniques to ensure the highest quality and standards are maintained. The Gerns famous gluten free ‘Ham off the bone’ is a classic example of such innovation and is marketed in retail and food service outlets across Australia. Gerns prides itself on using only Australian meat products in their entire range.
Great Grandfather Harry Gerns and his wife Eugenie emigrated from Hanover, Germany in 1891 and set up shop making traditional products as a German master butcher in a small shop on the corner of Queen and Albert Street in Brisbane city. In 1895 they moved the manufacturing to Geebung.
Bernard, Harold and Leo the sons of Harry and Eugenie took over the business in WW1 (1914) and ran the business until the 1960’s. Harold’s son Edwin Gerns took over in the mid 1960’s and ran the business making products with ingredients that enhanced the longevity of the product whilst also keeping families in mind.
Nowadays Edwin’s son Andrew runs the business and is the 4th generation of ham makers of a company that has been around for over 120 years; carrying on the traditional methods using high quality ingredients that enhance the quality of the end product.
