Today I met with our wonderful local state member Jonty Bush - Member for Cooper and discussed importance of community pharmacy, pharmacist scope of practise and federal labor’s 60 day policy. While we both support cheaper medicines for the public Jonty said she would write to the federal health minister in support of community pharmacies and their sustainability

newsGP - ‘Not sustainable’: Medicine shortages in focus The Government is being urged to shore up pharmaceutical supply chains to avoid ‘problematic’ disruptions to patient care.

A proposed 60-day prescription system could result in widespread medication shortages - ABC Canberra Pharmacist's are pleading for the Australian government to reconsider a proposal that would require them to dispense a 60-day supply for a number medications.

The Federal Labor government is proposing to announce a budget policy that would be catastrophic for the community pharmacy sector and Australian’s access to local pharmacies. Not only will this cause massive job losses in the industry, it will likely cause the closure of a large majority of your small local pharmacies. Whilst State Labor governments have embraced pharmacies hard work through the pandemic, and instigated trials into expanded scope of practice, this federal policy destroys any hope of this being implemented.

❌ The viability of our business is under threat. This risks pharmacy closure, reduced access to health services in our local community and impacts the livelihood of our employees.

❌ The entire medication supply chain is under threat, risking widespread medication shortages. Already terrible medication shortages will be made worse. There is a real risk that many patients will sustain harm or injury from lack of access to their medications, due to supply disruptions. Recently, New Zealand limited an antidepressant dispensing to 7 days at a time to ration the medication due to shortages. This could be your life under this proposal.

❌ Affordability and access of ALL medications and ALL services is under threat.

These are some of the very real and tangible threats that we face in light of proposed Federal Government budget policy to introduce 60-day medication dispensing.

You may think that 60-day medication dispensing will mean that you will only have to come to the pharmacy only half as often… This assumption is based on the entire premises that there will a pharmacy for you to attend, and that there will be medications available for you to purchase.
If this policy passes, you may be left with neither a local pharmacy nor any medications in the supply chain to obtain.

This is a lose-lose for ALL Australians.

If you so desire, please write to your local Federal Member, or Labor Senator in support of local community pharmacies.
