Its’s been a long year for JZS and like the rest of Australia we have been dealing with the fall out since covid. But we’re slowly getting back up on our feet. Last night one of our works under The GUBAL THAYEMIN PROJECT - (winds of change) opened as part of Queensland Museum’s Island Futures exhibition, curated by awesome sissy Rihanna Patrick.
"This exhibition explores and celebrates contemporary Torres Strait Islander identity, where visitors to this powerful and vibrant exhibition can discover more than 200 objects and images, interwoven with Islander perspectives and stories"
The GUBAL THAYEMIN PROJECT means winds of change in the Kala Kawaw Ya language of the Torres Strait and encompasses a series of interlinked components – a theatrical performance, a suite of digital resources and a hybrid video installation, that look to inspire language revitalization. The project centres Indigenous philosophy to underpin the adaption response to climate action. Co-created by Saibaian Cultural knowledge custodian Mr Jeff Aniba-Waia and his niece, theatre-maker and filmmaker Margaret Harvey of The Jo Ze spArks.
