πΏ National Threatened Species Day πΏβ
β
ποΈ Saturday, 7th September marks a day to reflect and take action for Australia's incredible wildlife!β
β
Established in 1996, this day serves as a reminder of the loss of the last known Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) in 1936 and the importance of protecting our threatened species today. Although we canβt change the past, thereβs still time to make a difference for the species that need us now.β
β
At Lone Pine, we're proud to care for several animals that are currently under threat, like the Long-nosed potoroo. Each one faces unique challenges in the wild, but together, we can make a difference! Swipe through to learn more about these incredible species and what you can do to help secure their future.β
β
Letβs work together to ensure these beautiful species donβt become a part of history. ππ
September is Save the Koala Month! πΏπ©Ίβ
β
Koalas are endangered in Queensland, facing threats from habitat loss, disease, and climate change. Without urgent help, these iconic animals could disappear from the wild. β
β
This month, all donations received will go directly towards purchasing vital rescue equipment to help save them. These supplies will be donated to local koala rescue groups and organisations who are on the frontlines, supporting sick and injured wild koalas. π¨πβ
β
We all have a role to play in protecting koalas. Join us in assisting the incredible organisations that work tirelessly to give koalas a second chance at life. Every contribution makes a difference! πβ

A new research paper on platypus longevity has been released, identifying our resident male platypus Barak, as the oldest male platypus ever known at 25 years old! ππ€β

Have you met Gary during your visit?β
β
Gary is our Gang-gang cockatoo who arrived at our sanctuary in June of 1997 from Currumbin Bird Sanctuary. Though we don't know his exact age, we do know that he is past breeding age. π©·β
β
In October of 2001, Gary met his feathered partner Gidget, and together they successfully raised two babies in December of 2007 πΌβ
β
Sadly, Gidget passed away in November 2023 after living a very fulfilled life here at Lone Pine. β€οΈβπ©Ήβ
β
To help Gary fill this void, his keepers have initiated some training which will enable him to be bought out of his aviary on the keepersβ hand and greet visitors.β
β
He will play an important role for his endangered species, being an Ambassador and raising awareness and support for conservation πβ
β
Here he is doing some training with Keeper Maddy!β
β
Next time you visit, come and say 'hi' to Gary! π

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary opened in 1927 as a safe refuge for sick, injured, and orphaned koalas, at a time when the species was being culled for the fur trade. Founder, Claude Reid, recognised something had to be done to help protect one of Australia's most iconic species.
Today, Lone Pine remains as a destination for local and international guests to not only see native Australian animals, but to also connect and learn, and to leave feeling inspired to make small, positive changes in their daily lives to help protect their own native wildlife and habitats.
We are committed to maximising the positive environmental and social impacts of our operations. We achieve this through water and energy efficiency, biodiversity, communication and planning.
Through cooperation with our employees, suppliers and customers, we aim to set a new standard in environmental wildlife management. This will contribute to building a stronger Lone Pine and a safer, cleaner, more sustainable Australia.
