Endodontist Dr Margot Anderson was delighted to participate last month in the Australian Dental Association Queensland Branch 2023 Annual Clinic Day panel discussion ‘The Patient is in Pain’, contributing to some insightful discussion with fellow panellists Assoc Prof Alex Forrest, Dr Sarah Chaw, Dr Geraldine Moses and Dr Jameel Kaderbhai. Thank you to the ADAQ for the opportunity to participate. There was a lot of content covered so we’re looking forward to revisiting the discussion on a future ADAQ podcast.

James Cook University 2023 dental graduands relaxed into the end of the year with the JCU Dental Student Association Graduation Cocktail Party held at The Chambers, Cairns on Sunday, 10 December 2023. Last Tuesday October 10th, recent dental graduates and referring dentists joined us for a complimentary educational evening in Brisbane CBD. Orthodontist Dr Elizabeth Fisher and DPL’s Dr Annalene Weston each presented an insightful lecture shedding light on the complications and implications surrounding patients’ use of direct-to-consumer products and dental tourism. We hope everyone who attended found the evening both helpful and enjoyable.

Did you know that in the same way you see a dental specialist called an Orthodontist for straightening teeth, you can see a dental specialist called an Endodontist for dental emergencies, infection, persistent pain and root canal treatment? So what exactly is an Endodontist?

Sometimes teeth get knocked and, while it’s important that you don’t panic, it’s also important that dental trauma is managed the right way and as promptly as possible.

Before you visit us for emergency treatment, there are some simple steps you can take to assist in saving your tooth.

If the tooth is loosened or partially broken:
1. For an adult tooth, push back in to position. For a baby tooth, jump to step 2.
2. If possible, find and keep any broken pieces of the tooth.
3. Take any broken pieces with you straight to your dentist or endodontist.

If the tooth is completely knocked out:
1. Rinse the tooth with clean water and push adult tooth back in to position. For a baby tooth, jump to step 2.
2. For a baby tooth, or if unable to push back in, place rinsed tooth in milk or cling wrap (not water).
3. Take the tooth with you straight to your dentist or endodontist.

Thank you to the University of Queensland Dental Students' Association - UQDSA committee for hosting us at their annual UQDSA Tradeshow on Thursday, 24 August. We would like to congratulate 5th year dental student Raewyn Huang who was drawn as the winner of our Apple AirPods Pro competition. Dr Margot Anderson was pleased to be able to present Raewyn with her prize at our Aspley practice. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing some familiar faces at the Tradeshow whilst also meeting many new dental students on the night.

Patients, before attending your appointment, your endodontist needs to review your medical history. Your medical history can affect the success of your root canal treatment and will guide your endodontist on how to provide safe treatment for you.
