Behind every successful man is a woman.
This is my story . Correction I don’t want to say I am successful but this is a journey I like to share .
Year 2004 me and my best mate decided to open our own restaurant, of course it was an indian restaurant. 26 years young and full of enthusiasm we opened indian appetite in a sleepy suburb of Everton park.
We barely made a wage . We resisted employing female staff to avoid any distractions from our focus on work.
After a very strong recommendation from a close friend , we agreed to employ Ling .
Ling was an international student from Taiwan . She had previously worked in china town , fortitude valley . She was humble , polite, funny and never had any work she wouldn’t do. From taking orders to washing dishes was all totally fine .
One evening , Ling brings an order to the kitchen , from a couple . The order had 3 entrees , 4 curries and 4 Naan breads . This is an order back in the day worth over $140 .
She was trained in china town to get big orders by her previous boss.
Our average spend was around $35 per couple and this was 4 times it .
I questioned , this order can’t be eaten by 2 people . I then spoke to the customer and asked them to reduce their order to 1 entree , 2 mains and 2 naans . With a promise if they were still hungry I could cook more within a short time. They spent $50 , but my ethics of business made this pretty and very homely girl to like her boss (Me 😜)
I probably lost $90 on extra sales on the night but I have since found a wife a life partner who has been with me through the ups and downs of the life’s journey.
We got married in Taiwan and in India to the satisfaction of both our families.
We continued to be self employed and have been through a beautiful journey of owning the Manly deck and other ventures while we raised our kids.
It’s this business that has given me the opportunity to connect with a community like the one I once grew up with. I grew up in a small town .
This sense of family , belonging and mateship has given me a home away from home. I sometimes can’t thank enough to my wife, my mum for all the encouragement and all of you for the last 12 years of support and friendship.
It’s a family of strangers , because of what I am blessed with at home .
I could only do this because of the unconditional & uninterrupted support of my wife . This is us and this is the family Behind Manly deck and I feel blessed to be sharing this story with my Deck family ❤️.
Also I like to add , it’s family that matters the most and it’s not about me and what I do .
It’s about us and what we do . May love be with you all 💕

Yesterday we were invited to new release wine tasting and we met Michael from Hay shed hill . We had already decided on a French rose to be on our new Menu . But then we tasted Hay shed hill rose . It was cheaper, better tasting and we knew which wine maker we are supporting.
It wasn’t hard to strike the French wine off the list. This is how a small business supports another small business . Seamless transition without any board meetings or tenders . This is why we need to have more small businesses. And the way we are going it’s going to be the Sad koala story . We all love them but we feel helpless and do nothing about it . We will only find them in zoos and sanctuary’s because we killed them while they thrived .

Todays punishment after an awesome Sunday was to Taste over 200 bottles of wines from all over the world 😜
Mostly from Australia and across the ditch and some from Europe too 🥂🥂
