Why is it important to understand the training your Physiotherapist has undertaken?
Ongoing professional development continues to challenge skillset, knowledge and application into clinical practice. Completion of university studies allows for external assessment and feedback - further helping clinicans understand and develop skills.
The Australian Physiotherapy Association has outlined a clear pathway for Physiotherapists - from Graduate (Tier 1), to Titled (Tier 2) and Specialists (Tier 3).
At Milton Physiotherapy, our staff have undertaken extensive training in Musculoskeletal and Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy - not just through external courses but also university postgraduate training.
Quentin is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist awarded in 2007 - Tier 3
Ann is an APA Tilted Muscloskeletal Physiotherapist -Tier 2
Caitlin is an APA Titled Musculoskeletal and Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist, and in 2024 became a Registrar on the Specialisation Training Program for Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy - Tier 2

So what might a program look like for you?
Whether it be to improve your bone health or maintain your bone heath - these are a few of the key loading considerations in development of your program
- high loading x2 per week
- moderate to high weightbearing impact loading
- impact exercises 5x10 - 3 x per week
Your program will be individualised based on your history - not everyone will get the same exercises, at the same load.
Some may use a barbell, others may use weights.
Some may stomp up stairs, others may use little jumps.

What about being steady and straight?
There are multicomponent ways we can challenge balance and spinal strengthening for osteoporosis management.
This may include:
- balancing on different objects
- use of resistance bands
- exploring different movements.
There are many ways we can challange and promote being steady and straight
Ref: Giangregorio et al 2015: Too fit to fracture: outcomes of a delphi consensus process on physical activity and exercise recommendations for adults with osteoporosis with or without vertebral fractures
When it comes to developing a program and where to start, these are some of the parameters we think about.
Why?
Because we know there are some risk factors linked to osteoporosis - and it is important that we consider them all in your program.
The ESSA position statement goes into depth regarding these considerations, but at Milton Physiotherapy we can talk you through each step of the way.
Save this slide for later!
This image represents the key information from the Uk consensus statement.
During your Physiotherapy consult - your therapist will be considering all of the things listed to develop a program that is appropriate for your based on your history.
For the health professionals - do you consider this?
Do you know there are Key principles we consider in management of Osteoporosis?
They include:

- Consider lifestyle changes
- Encourage ways to do more, not less
- Minimal activity will provide SOME benefit
- Physical activity and exercise are NOT associated with harm
- Painful vertebral fractures require clear and prompt guidance on how to adapt movements.
Does you program consider these principles?

Want to book in? Call 33693740 for an appointment.
These are the three key terms to come from the UK consensus statement. But what do they mean in context of osteoporosis management?
Strong: physical activity and exercise to benefit bone strength
Steady: physical activity and exercise to prevent falls
Straight: physical activity and exercise to reduce risk of vertebral fracture, improve posture and manage symptoms after vertebral fractures
Do YOU feel strong, steady and Straight with your exercise program?

How do we know the best ways to manage Osteoporosis?
Through publications and guidelines. There are two key ones we consider at present (knowing that the evidence is constantly evolving).
1. ESSA position statement on exercise prescription for the prevention and management of osteoporosis (2017)
2. UK consensus statement on physical activity and exercise for Osteoporosis (2021)
Over the next few weeks we will be reviewing key outcomes of these papers and what it means for you.

How can you check your bone health for Osteoporosis?
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a DEXA scan, which you GP can refer for you.
A DEXA scan will review the bone density in your femur (thigh bone) and lumbar spine (lower back). Two reference scores are then provided:
T - Score: comparison by standard deviation of young population, matched for s*x and ethnicity - used for post-menopausal women, men greater than 50 years old.
Z-score: compared by standard deviation to age, s*x, ethnicity population - premenopausal women, men younger than 50, children
At Milton Physiotherapy our Physiotherapists can discuss with you your DEXA results and help with development of a plan to help manage your osteoporosis.

How common something is. And we have data on osteoporosis world wide.
137 million women and 21 million men have high osteoporotic fracture risk worldwide
This is expected to double over the next 40 years.

How do you move your body?
5 years at Milton Physiotherapy!
How quickly time has flown – 5 years ago Caitlin started at Milton Physiotherapy after 11 years of service in the Australian Defence Force as a Physiotherapist.
Since starting at Milton Physiotherapy Caitlin has fully understood how passionate she about supporting the veteran community through her knowledge as a service member with multiple operational experiences (Afghanistan), as well as understanding transition into the civilian space, including navigating injury management and rehabilitation during this period.
Her background providing Physiotherapy support to a multitude of sports teams at a local, national, and international level, (including XXI Commonwealth Games in 2018) has fostered her love of different sports – with a particular interest in shooting disciplines and pole dancing/aerialists.
During her time at Milton Physiotherapy she has completed her double Masters ( Masters Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy in 2019, Masters Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy in 2021), and today will travel to Melbourne to commencing the Australian College of Physiotherapists Specialisation Training Program in 2024 (one of four Physiotherapists in Australia selected).
We can happily confirm Caitlin has firmly planted her roots at Milton Physiotherapy and we look forward to AT LEAST another 5 years.
Our exercise program has changed!
You may see your app change if you have downloaded your program - it is not a virus just a platform update. All patients exercise programs remain the same.

Why were these concussion guidelines released?
To provide information on how to recognise and manage concussion from time of injury through to safe return to education, work and playing sport.
Targeted at individuals participating in underage and community sports (primary school age upwards).
Why?
- Often in community sport health care professionals are not available to diagnose and monitor individuals.
- Increasing knowledge around potential health ramification for repeated head trauma/sports related concussion.
At Milton Physiotherapy we understand the nature of concussion and the new guidelines, and can help answer your questions and develop a management plan.
