After a term of exploring diverse landscape techniques and materials, last Friday's ArtPlay class brought us outdoors to Bunya Riverside.
Surrounded by nature, we embraced the peaceful joy of creating art together, while also finding moments of quiet solitude.

We're often asked where did our Fox Blocks STEM program come from?

Well, let us tell you—Fox Blocks is our homegrown hero! Way back in 2008, we set out to create something brand new for kids—a type of extracurricular activity that didn’t really exist at the time. We wanted to teach the fundamentals of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in a fun, hands-on, and engaging way. It was a time when iPods were king, smartphones were just emerging, and well before iPads or personal tech became staples in classrooms. The Flying Fox Studios team saw an exciting opportunity to blend creativity, hands-on learning, and (mostly) screen-free technology into something truly unique. And that's how our journey began!

Designed and developed right here in Brisbane by our incredibly talented team of teachers at Flying Fox Studios, the program is the brainchild of our lead curriculum developer, Justin Gilfillan. Justin brings a unique blend of real-world engineering expertise (thanks to his previous work as a Mechanical Engineer with local government) and top-notch teaching skills, recently adding a Master’s Degree in Teaching and Learning to his skills.

Over the years, thousands of curious, creative, and clever kids have walked through our doors. They’ve constructed rockets, built bridges, designed entire cities, explored the wonders of space, travelled back in time to learn about world wonders, and grand engineering feats.

Whether it’s our Preppies digging into palaeontology or our primary schoolers figuring out how cranes, windscreen wipers, and lift emergency brakes work, our Fox Blocks STEM program sparks curiosity and teaches real-world skills that kids just love.

It's always so quiet here when our classes have finished for the term 🌻 But that also means the countdown is on until our School Holiday Workshops begin😀
The preparations are well underway, and we can't wait! Just over a week to go and the studio will be buzzing again! 🎨🎵🔭

Our Art Discovery (Grades 3 to 5) and Art Experience (Grades 9 to 12) have been exploring soft pastels recently. For many students it's the first time they have ever used soft pastels.
These pieces are a one class exercise in colours, blending and composition. Don't they look great!

Can you believe it? Flying Fox Studios is turning 18 this September! 🥳

While reminiscing last month, we found a photograph taken in March 2007, just as we were about to take over what is now our wonderful art studio.
For our first 6 months we ran our Kindermusik classes and our Art classes in the same space 😳. We were so excited to have the opportunity to grow into a studio that would be able to offer two teaching spaces. It was then only just over a year later when our STEM program began.

That 2007 photo was meant to match a much earlier shot of the studio from the 1960s.
Fast forward 17 years, and last month, we added a 2024 photo to the collection. It's incredible to see how the city has grown around us over that time.

How cool, a piece from our Glass Art Winter Fox workshop last holidays 🦊

The countdown is on, Term 3 begins next Monday July 15th!

Our Art classes will be exploring the wide and vibrant landscapes of Australia while our STEM classes are discovering Robotics, launching into Space, and being a Rescue Team for the term!

Our Kindermusik babies will sing, dance and play in class, while our toddlers and preschoolers will move and groove, dance and rhyme about pets, gardens, colours, shapes and animals!

Flying Fox Studios is the place to be if you're looking for fun, community minded, creative, engaging, and fabulous classes!

What a fabulous day to be at the Brisbane French Festival down at Southbank.
We have some fantastic Matisse inspired mini art workshops running in the kids festival at 11am and 2pm today and tomorrow.
As well as a stall jam packed with our most favourite French and European kids toys, puzzles and games.

The budding engineers in our Groundwork STEM class have had a blast during Term 2!
From dinosaurs to wild animals, farm animals to pets, our Groundwork class has been a hub of creativity, problem-solving, and experimentation.
We have planned, sorted, constructed, engineered, built and invented!
Our curiosity about the natural world and its creatures has thrived as we have explored the idea that science and engineering are powerful tools for understanding and improving our world.
Next term Groundwork will be building helicopters, planes, and trucks as we delve into our unit "To The Rescue". If you're stuck up a tree or down a hole, you have nothing to fear the Groundwork team will be there to help!

Our Kindermusik Level 2 Our Time class (18 months to 3.5 years) has had a busy and full and fun term!
From our toddlers just starting to walk, to our energetic explorers who race around the room , each and every student has blossomed in their own unique way 💕
We have giggled, danced, sang, and played our way through so many engaging musical activities. We have made new friends, worked together as a class, and shared many special moments as every beat and melody lays the foundation for language development, problem-solving, and creative expression.

We wish all our little Our Time learners a wonderful winter break and we will see you all next term 🎵

Our smallest studio artists, our Scribblers (2 to 5 years) have loved our animals unit this term!
We have painted and cut and moulded and stuck. We have used lots of different types of tape, cut with scissors, rolled and folded and crimped and had a whole lot of fun.
We have drawn dogs and frogs, we have moulded dinosaurs with clay, we painted on all types of different surfaces and used lots of different tools. We even created the coolest underwater bubbles for our under the sea animals.

Term 3 Scribblers classes are enrolling now, and next term we are travelling all over Australia. We will explore the beach, go camping, visit a rainforest and maybe even drop in on country show!

Our littlest music makers have filled our hearts with joy during this bustling and delightful term!
Our Village babies have stopped to smell the roses....and the lily of the valley, and tulips, carnations and pansies in our lovely unit 'Dew Drops'.
Rich with sensory experiences our Village Babies have delighted in exploration, listening, play, dance, song, and the discovery of new sounds, sensations, instruments, and even the beauty of real-life flowers.

Our Kindermusik Level 3 Imagine That class (3 to 5 years) have had a term filled with music and imagination.

We have detected rhythm patterns, nuances, and timbre in sounds. We have made so much music, danced, skipped, hopped, jumped and slid around the classroom.
We have explored lots of new musical words, and even gone ice skating in a snow storm inside our classroom!
