Dear Friends and family and extended family
We are celebrating the most auspicious Festival "Paryushan" (Festival of Forgiveness).
This festival commences from Saturday 31st August for 8 days, with the official fast-breaking ceremony to mark completion of the festival on Sunday 8th September.
Paryushan, one of the most significant festivals within the Jain faith is observed with austerity over an 8-day period by the Jains for the upliftment of one’s soul through fasting, meditation, self-introspection and forgiveness.
Over these 8 days we reflect over any pain or discomfort we may have caused directly or indirectly, knowingly or unknowingly, through our words, thoughts or actions to those who we connect with or surround us.
In view of that, I seek your forgiveness if I have caused you any pain, discomfort or frustration over the past year.
In my native language, we convey this through a phrase “Michhaami Dukkadam” (may all my faults be dissolved, and forgiveness received from those whom I have hurt).
The foundational principle of Jainism is practising non-violence through our thoughts, behaviour, consumption, and general living. To join me in celebration of this festival, I encourage you to consider:
- A vegetarian diet for some or all days (or even just one meal).
- Helping other humans or animals who may be in need of food, shelter or care.
- Consider being extra compassionate and patient for scenarios that may usually cause anger or frustration.
- Meditation or some peaceful introspective time, or
- Reflecting on and seeking forgiveness from anyone you feel you may have hurt during the past year.
Please don’t feel pressured to do anything you aren’t comfortable with, as my intention is purely to share my festivities with you all.
This is only my request and no offence intended to other faiths/beliefs/observances.
